On Nov. 28, Journey will bring their “Final Frontier” farewell tour to a close with a homecoming show at San Francisco’s Chase Center. “It just feels like a good time to get off the train,” keyboardist Jonathan Cain said shortly before the tour began.
“You’ve got to at some point say enough’s enough. It’s a grind, man. I just feel like this tour is a beautiful closing chapter…It’s time to move on.”
The first indication that the goodbye in San Francisco wouldn’t truly be a farewell came in September, when their name appeared on the 2027 Stagecoach festival lineup. But this was a makeup date, since their planned Stagecoach performance this year was rained out. It seemed like Stagecoach was possibly going to be a quickie encore show that truly marked the end of the band.
But earlier this week, Journey founder Neal Schon shared a message on Facebook that made it very clear their future plans involved a lot more than Stagecoach. “After completing 110 shows in 2026, we’ve felt something powerful happen within Journey,” he wrote. “Playing two and a half hours each night in our ‘Evening with Journey’ shows—the longest shows we’ve ever played—has brought us closer together, both musically and personally. Our fans have touched our hearts and helped pull us together. Your love, energy and passion for this music have reminded us how much we still share and how much this journey means to all of us. What began as ‘The Final Frontier’ now feels more like ‘The Long Goodbye.’ We’re letting our hearts—and the connection we feel with you every night—help guide what comes next.”
And despite numerous unambiguous statements that he was stepping aside after this tour, Cain is also seemingly changing his mind. “I’m overwhelmed with the turnout on this tour,”he recently told Ultimate Classic Rock. “It’s so strong. The fans have just been terrific. I’ve always looked at it like, well, you’ve got to know when it’s time to walk away, but just judging from this turnout, maybe we think about it. Right now we’re focusing on this tour. We’ve played everywhere we can play, and we’ve really been beating the bushes. I think it’s time for a little bit of a rest, so we’re gonna leave it here and see what happens.”
Journey have been through more unpredictable twists and turns than just about any other rock group in history. It’s difficult to know exactly what’s going to happen in the future, but here are seven possible scenarios — and one that isn’t happening no matter how desperately some of you might wish to see it.
Journey Keep Touring With the Current Lineup
The simple and obvious move is to shrug off the whole “farewell tour” thing and just keep touring with this exact lineup. That would be the move from the playbook of the Who, Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Tina Turner, Slayer, andjust about every other act in music history that staged farewell tours. Some of these artists genuinely intended to step aside before changing their minds years later, and others simply saw a reliable gimmick to dramatically increase ticket sales and had no actual intention of retiring. In either case, there’s no rock & roll police force to stop groups from booking additional tours after their farewell runs end. Some jilted fans might stay home in the future, but the vast majority will come back.
Arnel Pineda Quits
One day before Journey kicked off their supposed farewell tour, Journey frontman Arnel Pineda told Rolling Stone that he nearly left the band prior to this tour. “Back in 2024, I said to them, ‘If you’re planning to do a farewell tour, you better tell me, because my issues and my personal problems are getting more intense, and I don’t know if I want to go with you,'” he said. “I said, ‘I want you to discuss the schedule with me.’ It is what it is now…. But then, I was really not happy with how they scheduled this tour. My body has changed. I can’t take the cold weather anymore.”
Schon confirmed his account. “It’s been very confusing,” he said. “He sent a lot of messages that he was overwhelmed with his personal life and didn’t know if he could do it. But we all signed contracts…Whatever goes down, I’m ready to plow through it, survive, and float to the top…I love Arnel. He’s been a total martyr, like a warrior.”
After the final bow in San Francisco, Pineda will likely have fulfilled the terms of his contract with concert promoters AEG. It’s certainly possible he feels better about sticking around and will sign on for additional tours. But it’s also possible he’s planning on heading back to the Philippines, never to return. In that case, they’ll need yet another new lead singer.
Hugo Valenti Joins the Band
Back in 1998, singer Hugo Valenti — who bears a striking physical and vocal resemblance to Steve Perry — got a call from Sony A&R rep John Kalodner about possibly joining the band. But the idea was nixed before he could even audition. “I remember seeing him in a video, and he looked exactly like Perry, which I thought was really weird,” Schon said in 2003. “I said if we are going to get somebody with him looking exactly like Perry, I thought that was a little too weird!” Valenti went on to front the successful Journey tribute band Voyage, and now leads an entity called Hugo – The Ultimate Journey Tribute.
But in August, out of nowhere, Journey invited him onto their stage at two shows on their Japanese tour, where he sang “Faithfully” and “Keep on Runnin’.” He had some vocal problems on night one due to issues with his in-ear monitors, but sounded much better at the second show. Might this have been a test run for a future incarnation of Journey? (This may sound unlikely, but Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek initially rejected longtime Jim Morrison impersonatorDave Brock when they formed a new version of the Doors in 2002, but eventually made him a part of the band.)
They Launch Yet Another New Singer Search
Several lead singers have fronted Journey over the years, including Gregg Rolie, Robert Fleischman, Steve Perry, Steve Augeri, and Jeff Scott Soto. They reached the zenith of their popularity with Perry, and continuing without him initially seemed like a ludicrous proposition. But once they hired Arnel Pineda in 2007, the group was once again headlining arenas and even the occasional stadium. There’s no reason they can’t find another young, hungry singer to take Pineda’s place should this become necessary. (Valenti is 65 and perhaps not quite ready for the intense rigors of a long Journey tour.) They found Pineda on YouTube, and there must be at least one person on this planet capable of filling his shoes. They just have to start looking.
They Don’t Hire Anyone to Replace Pineda
Prior to Steve Perry joining the band in 1977, original Santana lead singer Gregg Rolie provided the lead vocals from behind a keyboard. And on this tour, Pineda steps to the side quite a few times to grab a breath and allow Cain, drummer Deen Castronovo, and keyboardist Jason Derlatka a chance to sing a song or two. They all do remarkable jobs, especially Castronovo. It’s slightly hard to imagine, and it might take them out of arenas and into smaller venues, but they could continue to play Journey shows with Cain, Castronovo, and Derlatka handling all the vocals.
Schon Activates Journey Beyond
Back in 2019, when Journey were on a brief break, Schon hit the club circuit with a new group he called Journey Through Time. It included Rolie and Castronovo, and the shows dug deep into the Journey catalog and resurrected songs they hadn’t touched in decades. This thrilled hardcore Journey fans, but enraged the other members of the group. They felt the name was simply too close to Journey. That’s why Journey Through Time lasted for just a matter of days.
But Schon recently trademarked the name Journey Beyond, and he’s hinted that’s the name of his next project. If Journey indeed decides to call it a day, Cain actually retires, and Schon doesn’t face another legal hurdle over the name, it’s quite possible the future of Journey is Journey Beyond. It’s unclear who would be in such a group, but OG fans would love to see Rolie back. It would bring the saga full circle.
They Actually Retire
This one feels the least likely, but it is worth considering the possibility that Journey have a change of heart about their change of heart and never play again in any form after Stagecoach. But who are we kidding? That’s not going to happen. It’s more likely they’ll tour until Neal Schon is too old and feeble to hold a guitar, and then they’ll likely take a page from the Foreigner playbook and just license the name out to a bunch of randos. As long as people are willing to go out and see “Journey” play the hits, there will likely be some version of the group happy to take their money.
Don’t Even Think About That Scenario
We live in a world of vast possibilities. The fact that any of us even exist is the product of wildly unlikely circumstances, and yet here we all are. If you believe in the multiverse theory popularized by comic books and Rick and Morty, there are infinite versions of reality where anything that’s possible is actually happening. That includes worlds where hammerhead sharks have wings and fly, black olives are currency, and William “Refrigerator” Perry served six terms as president after single-handedly fighting off an alien invasion. But in none of these infinite worlds does Steve Perry return for a Journey reunion tour. A certain contingent of fans will never let the dream go, but it’s never, ever, ever happening. Everyone needs to accept this and move on with their lives.
