R.I.P. to an O.G. legend of the music business: Columbia House, the mail-order record club that famously promised fans a dozen LPs, CDs, cassettes, or 8-track tapes for a penny. But it’s finally shutting down. “After 9/15/26, The Columbia House will no
longer be accepting new orders,” says a tragic message on its website. “You can still purchase books with your credit card or credits as normal.”
Columbia House became a long-running part of fan culture, thanks to its ubiquitous ads, in print and on TV. It began in 1955 as the Columbia Record Club, but it really exploded in the early 1970s when it became Columbia House. It peaked in the Nineties CD boom, with 16 million members. But the sales pitch was always the same: join the club for one cent, and get a record-collection starter kit delivered to your doorstep.
Wow, all those albums for a penny? What a deal! For young fans obsessed with music, this looked like our craziest rock & roll dreams come true. Columbia House hooked in generations of kids, and taught us all a valuable lesson: Never believe a damn word the adults tell you, especially if they’re in the music biz.
Because yes, kitten, there was a catch. All you had to do was keep ordering additional albums at “regular Club prices,” plus shipping and handling. They bombarded you with a new album every month, one they picked out for you, and if you didn’t return it by their ridiculously tight deadline, you got billed full retail cost for albums you didn’t want. Trying to cancel your subscription was like trying to escape the Hotel California. “Negative option billing” was how Columbia House finessed it, but it was just a polite way of saying, “We are programmed to receive.”
If you’re wondering how they stayed in business this long, the cruel answer is that they basically didn’t —Columbia House already shut down its music operations in 2009. It’s been hustling DVDs since then. It filed for bankruptcy in 2015, but survived in the bottom-feeder video-sleaze racket, amid many ownership changes. The final announcement was first spotted by YouTube’s Channel 33 RPM, via Cord Cutter News.
I never joined the Club because I heard too many horror stories from older kids who signed up and then got stuck in the nightmare of trying to cancel. It was one expensive penny to spend. In this way, Columbia House was a rite of passage, a crash course in grown-up capitalism, in case you didn’t learn from sending cash to a comic book for a remote-control ghost or sea monkeys. The Club taught Gen X and millennial kids how to feel ripped off — the ultimate punk lesson.
But those ads fueled my childhood music fantasies in ways that still hit deep for me. The ads were a tantalizing list of album titles — in the old days, a stack of 8-tracks with the names on the spine. I learned so much music history poring over those ads. It’s where I learned Led Zeppelin had an album called Runes. (Which just turned out to mean their untitled fourth album.) The ad usually showed a dazed young woman struggling with an armful of Peter Frampton or Neil Diamond or Kiss vinyl, with a headline like “Would you believe…” or “Get a lot of music. Go a little crazy.”
When the Sunday newspapers came, my sisters dove for the funnies, but I always went for Parade magazine first, to drool over the Columbia House ads in the back pages. Reading those album titles while simultaneously listening to Casey Kasem on American Top 40 was a seductive Sunday-morning pop speedball. I always compiled my weekly list of seven, or eight, or however many records were on offer at the time, to slip into my imaginary one-cent shopping cart. Other kids did the Sunday crossword puzzle — I was pondering if it was worth blowing two selections on double albums like Santana’s Moonflower or The Best of Rod Stewart, Volume 2. I’m not 100% sure who “Spooky Tooth” were, or if they were even a real band, but I can still rattle off a few of their albums, because damn if they didn’t make the Club canon year after year.
It became a standard intro joke in comedy clubs: “This next guy just signed a deal with Columbia Records! He gets twelve albums for a penny!” The Onion’s book Our Dumb Century had a Watergate news report from 1972. “Nixon Ordered to Hand Over 8-Track Tapes,” the headline says. “Nixon to Be Fined One Penny for First Eight Tapes Not Turned In, $4.95 for Each Additional Tape.” According to the article, material on the tapes has been described as “‘extremely sensitive,’ including songs from Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor.”
Columbia House got even huger in the Nineties, with late-night TV ads that came on like the cheesiest sitcom jingle ever. (“Big enough to entertain America…one person at a time!”) Artists from Pearl Jam to Meat Loaf protested the mail-order clubs. But Columbia House never ran out of rookie fans too desperate for Boyz II Men and Green Day CDs to read the fine print.
But it was also a cheat sheet to the fine points of music culture, a tantalizing chance to daydream about what it would be like to have your own grown-up music collection. I spent years wondering what “reel-to-reel” meant, just because the ads listed it as a format. (Yet you had to squint to see the tiny warning, “Albums marked with a * are not available on reel tapes.” Sneaky bastards.)
The Columbia House of recent years has been a shadow of its former album-slanging self. For the past 17 years, it’s been a niche DVD warehouse, with an extremely bizarre catalog of this-movie-actually-happened? cinema oddities. The home page offers films like the Heather Graham erotic thriller Suitable Flesh, or Joel McHale’s Christmas-themed slasher flick It’s a Wonderful Knife. There’s also an Owen Wilson rom-com called Paint, where he plays a fictionalized Bob Ross who learns to find true love, wig and all. Turns out this is a real movie, from 2023 — WTF?
But hey, at least they outlived Blockbuster. Hell, they outlived the penny. But now, as Boyz II Men would sing, they’ve come to the end of the road. So if you never paid up your Club bill, congratulations on beating the house. You stuck it to the Man and got away with it. And if you want to make one final purchase, better do it quick. But either way, let’s pour one out for Columbia House. Or — better yet — pour out a dozen shots for one cent, and skip out on the tab.
