Tom Cruise has officially announced the sequel to Days of Thunder, with Anne Hathaway joining the cast for the follow-up to the 1990 racing film.
The stars made the announcement Saturday at an empty Daytona International Speedway — home of the Daytona 500
— in front of a scuffed-up, lime green NASCAR touting a Summer 2028 release.
While the film was rumored to be fast-tracked in recent months, shooting won’t happen right away: “I’m gonna have this baby, then we’re gonna make this movie,” the pregnant Hathaway quipped in the announcement video.
Paramount added in a synopsis, “Tom Cruise will return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle and will be joined by Anne Hathaway who is set to play a team owner and engineer in the upcoming follow-up to the groundbreaking 1990 film that revolutionized cinema. Cruise will star and produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Jonathan Levine is set to direct from a script by Will Staples.”
The sequel will be shot in IMAX and released exclusively in theaters on June 2, 2028 for formats including Dolby Cinema and 4DX, Variety reports.
Days of Thunder is the second iconic film franchise that Cruise has revisited decades later, following the release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, 36 years after the original came out in 1986; similarly, 38 years will have passed between the Days of Thunder movies. In addition to the forthcoming Digger and the Days sequel, Cruise is also returning to the Maverick role in a third Top Gun film.
