It’s official — we’ve entered an exciting, new Becky G era. The pop star announced her highly-anticipated new album Baraja Bendita on Friday, and it’s ramping up to be her most unapologetic era yet. The LP, set for release on Aug. 14, marks her fifth
album and the title translates to a “blessed deck of cards.”
“I’ve spent years letting people meet Becky G first and let them figure out reBBeca later. this album stops explaining the difference, con las dos Bs — both showing up & telling their truths — BB embraces it all,” Becky wrote in the caption of an Instagram post announcing the new project. “Baraja Bendita is about choosing your own fate and owning your next move,” she added. Becky finished her note with a sentiment in Spanish. “I feel like I want to start showing my hand already!!!! What about you guys???”
Along with the news, Becky G has also shared unapologetic new track “Patrona,” and its electrifying music video, cementing the boss bitch energy of this new chapter. “Big daddy’s my pеrsona/They order shots, I call ’em/Just know I’m patrona,” she sings in the chorus. Directed by Pedro Artola and filmed in New York City, the visual finds Becky boxing and training hard in an old-school gym.
Earlier this year, Becky teased the world of Baraja Bendita with high-powered singles “EPA” and “Marathon.” Just like those songs, “Patrona” and the rest of the album moves seamlessly through Spanish and English, reflecting the singer’s Chicana background. In May, the singer wrote an essay about honoring her Mexican heritage and immigrant family for Rolling Stone‘s American Icons issue. “How could I ever forget where I come from? … For me, it’s so close to home. It’s a part of me,” she wrote.
It also seems like Becky will take Baraja Bendita on the road. In her announcement, she wrote in Spanish: “I’ve been enjoying every single song, all by myself in the studio, at home, and in the car, but now it’s almost time for you to hear it too. I really hope we can sing and dance to it together very soon.” Here’s to hoping.
