Jay-Z’s JAŸ-Z30 exhibit opened in Brooklyn, New York’s Dumbo neighborhood on Tuesday (June 24), offering a sweeping look at the rapper, entrepreneur, and cultural icon’s three-decade journey and legacy through music, fashion, and literature.
The evening
unfolded like a living time capsule. Designed as a celebration of Jay-Z’s career and the milestones that helped define it, the installation brought together longtime collaborators, supporters, industry insiders, and fans for an immersive experience that honored the 25th and 30th anniversaries of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. More than a retrospective, JAŸ-Z30 felt like a vibrant reminder of how deeply Jay-Z’s catalog has become woven into the fabric of New York culture.
As guests arrived at the venue, they were welcomed by servers carrying trays of champagne-filled flutes of Ace of Spades and spicy margaritas. The drinks set a celebratory tone from the outset, creating an atmosphere that blended exclusivity with hometown pride. Throughout the space, attendees explored displays that chronicled different chapters of Jay-Z’s evolution, from his early days as an ambitious Brooklyn lyricist to his emergence as a global business and entertainment powerhouse.
A number of recognizable faces were in attendance. Daniel Kaluuya was spotted among the crowd, alongside Mekhi Becton, Dave East, Young Guru, Da’Vinci of BMF, Ebro, and Peter Rosenberg. Their presence underscored the broad reach of Jay-Z’s influence, extending far beyond music and into film, sports, media and popular culture.
DJ First Choice kept the energy high by spinning a selection of Jay-Z classics. Tracks like “Can’t Knock the Hustle” echoed through the venue, immediately transporting guests back to the time when Reasonable Doubt first arrived and forever altered the trajectory of East Coast rap. The music served as both entertainment and historical backdrop, reinforcing the significance of the milestone being celebrated.
As the event continued, Ebro stepped forward to introduce Young Guru, one of Jay-Z’s closest collaborators and a key figure in the development of countless recordings throughout his career. Young Guru then took over the turntables and guided attendees through a set deeply rooted in Roc-A-Fella history. Digging into the archives, he delivered a sequence of records that highlighted the depth of Jay-Z’s catalog before surprising the room with an unreleased version of “Ain’t I,” in one of the evening’s most memorable moments.
The themed exhibit revealed the extensive planning that went into creating a comprehensive celebration of Jay-Z’s career. The concept for JAŸ-Z30 first took shape earlier this year, Chris Santin, president of Roc Nation distribution, revealed. That vision eventually grew into a display intended to represent every major dimension of Jay-Z’s journey.
“We wanted to make sure we covered everything that Jay’s career means. Obviously, in a written form, Decoded and Book of Hov were big in his career,” he told VIBE. “Merchandise, paper planes, clothing, his affinity for the Yankees are represented in the collaboration, and then physical product—the vinyl, cassettes. We’ll have CDs and other things for sale, too. We just wanted to make sure it has everything. Jay’s lifestyle, literature, and his music.”
That philosophy was evident throughout the installation. Each display connected the worlds of music, entrepreneurship, and storytelling, while reflecting the broader cultural footprint his albums created. Visitors encountered books, apparel, physical releases, and rare memorabilia, all arranged to tell a larger story about his artistic growth and longevity. Naturally, Jay-Z played a hands-on role in shaping the final presentation.
“All of the merch is approved by Jay, reviewed by Jay,” said Chris Santini, President of Roc Nation distribution. “The physical product, anything that was deployed, was approved by him. The books were previously approved, so it was just placement. And then, any other element, he had a lot of input, particularly visuals and styles, because he wants to make sure everything is cohesive and fits with the aesthetic.”
Among the most eye-catching artifacts was a piece directly connected to the release of Reasonable Doubt, which celebrates its 30th anniversary, the central focus of JAŸ-Z30. The Blueprint also received significant recognition, highlighting another defining chapter in Jay-Z’s catalog and demonstrating the remarkable span between two landmark projects that continue to influence future generations in hip-hop.
“One piece is a 30-year-old piece, which is the main jacket from the release party of Reasonable Doubt,” Santini revealed. “The others are in the form of collaboration with the Yankees, so some Yankees jerseys, bomber jackets, and then some pieces that commemorate the artwork from when we rolled out the president for the beginning of the year, and a couple of other pieces that have tracklist, album title, stuff like that for Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint.”
Guests interested in owning a piece of the experience learned that many items are exclusive to the exhibit. The possibility of seeing Jay-Z himself wearing some of the showcased apparel at his upcoming New York Yankees stadium concerts in July generated additional excitement.
“That’s possible. You’ve got a Yankees jersey here. I mean, Jay’s style is up to him. So we’ll see,” Santini shared. “I know he’s going to wear these pieces, though, so you’re definitely likely to see him wearing the jersey at some point. Definitely a jacket at some point. Because everything is approved by him, it’s something he would wear.”
For Santini, one of the most rewarding aspects was revisiting decades of history and translating it into a contemporary experience.
“Being able to look back on everything and then being able to highlight it now. Going through the archive and making it matter in the here and now by using what works now and seeing how well it translates. So that’s been really rewarding.”
Attendees also received a preview of another ambitious component of the JAŸ-Z30 celebration: an immersive New York-themed installation centered around a subway experience.
“That’s like a subway station takeover. We got five train cars wrapped, and then on the inside, we have slightly different experiences in each one,” he said. “One is like a listening. Videos, old films, interviews, and stuff like that. It’ll feature a lot of these products, plus many more music-related products, along with some of the singles and other things we’ve done over time. That was like an immersive New York feel. It has a lot of the styling of it.”
The artwork is featured in different places, different promo pictures, and ads are featured around to give you a gritty feel of ‘96 within the train.”
Ultimately, organizers hope visitors leave with more than photographs and souvenirs. They hope the exhibit reconnects people with the memories attached to the music that has soundtracked much of the last three decades.
“I would hope that they take home something that gives them the memory of something from over 30 years. Whether it’s something from ‘96, ‘98, or some other point in time, we feel like we have enough here where someone can be able to tap back into the memories and have something that commemorates it because in the past we never really had those things,” he added. “You would just have the CDs, and we didn’t really have vinyl with the merch, with all the things. Someone who’s been loving an album for 25 years or 30 years gets to have something tangible to match up with everything, like all the other fans are able to all the time.
“It’s really payback for the fans so that they can have the same things that they would always want or they might have wanted over the past 30 years. As a big fan, I know I feel a lot better knowing that now we have all the elements that should be there for each of these releases over time and a full catalog.”
For now, the experience remains exclusive to New York.
“No, that’s not currently the plan, but if things go well, then we can always keep going. So, hopefully things go really well, and we can keep things going. If not, the current plan is just this. Everybody should take advantage of the time that they have to come here because it’s a very limited window, and I’m sure a lot of people will be here starting tomorrow, so just take advantage because there’s no plan.”
Those looking to attend still have an opportunity to secure their place.
“We encourage everybody to come in tomorrow. Go online. Anybody who’s signed up for anything at JAŸ-Z30 has, as of a couple of hours ago, time entries they can reserve spaces for, so they can come in starting at their reservation time. So if people want a book time now to come in, I suggest they use the system to reserve a time. If not, show up. Well, doors open at 11:00 a.m.”
From the celebratory drinks and rare music moments to the carefully curated artifacts spanning three decades, the launch of JAŸ-Z30 transformed a Brooklyn evening into a historic tribute to Jay-Z’s impact. The exhibit not only commemorated landmark anniversaries but also served as a powerful reflection of a career whose influence continues to resonate across music, culture, and New York City itself.
