An epic meeting of música mexicana lore and a veteran Texas band that has consistently taken norteño into unexpected terrain took place Tuesday in Mexico City when Intocable performed in front of 300,000 people at El Zocalo Capitalino to celebrate Mexican
Independence Day.
For Intocable, the two-hour show was a highly emotional affair, as it confirmed the extent to which the sextet’s Nineties hits have become an integral part of Mexican pop culture. But unlike other norteño legends, like Los Tigres del Norte, the band’s songs betray the radio dreams of a group of childhood friends who grew up listening to Aerosmith and Tom Petty. No wonder they quoted a bit of AC/DC after the fiery opening track, “Aire.”
The rollicking show focused on such expected catalog hits as “Sueña” y “Todo Para Que”, but singer and accordionist Ricky Muñoz, who turned 51 on Tuesday, invited the audience to keep an open mind as the group premiered the lead single off its forthcoming album, Nostalgia Radical. Muñoz was the charismatic star of the show throughout, thrilling the massive crowd with his passionate vocalizing and sophisticated accordion lines. Thirty-three years into their career, Intocable sound more progressive than ever before.
