Over the past four decades, SummerStage has become a New York City tradition. The festival, which the CityParks Foundation operates, has provided stages to some of music’s biggest names, as well as artists just breaking in. Over the years, Lou Reed, Curtis
Mayfield, Joni Mitchell, Public Enemy, Mavis Staples, Buddy Guy, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, among many others, have performed.
The gallery that follows captures just a few of the legendary artists who’ve played SummerStage along with commentary from Joe Killian, SummerStage’s founder and executive producer from its inception until 1993, as well as the founder of Killian + Company, and Erika Elliott, the CityParks Foundation’s SummerStage Executive Artistic Director since 2004.
This year’s lineup includes Spoon, Shaggy, and a Bastille Day celebration. Full details are on theSummerStage website.
