Mastodon have unleashed another single from their upcoming Marrow Deep album, “In the Ruins.”
In the Hey Beautiful Jerk-directed-and-edited video, Frank, a skeletal being with one eye serving as its head, journeys through ruined landscapes, apparently
in search of some heart and finds one.
“The initial inspiration for Frank and the concept for ‘In the Ruins’ came to me when I was in the ER for 10 hours with the worst eye infection of my life. The pain was so bad it felt like my eye was revolting and wanted to escape my head,” said the director and editor in a statement. “I had just talked to [drummer] Brann [Dailor] about the meaning of the song and how it was inspired by his and [bassist] Troy’s [Sanders] recent losses. The expression ‘picking up the pieces’ came to me and I sketched a very rough version of Frank on my phone, capturing the idea as fast as I could before my eye wanted to escape my face once again.”
The single follows the release of “Snakes for Dinner,” which features guest vocals from Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, and “Your Ghost Again.”
Marrow Deep arrives on Aug. 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. It’s the first full-length album released without founding guitarist-singer Brent Hinds, with whom the band parted ways in March 2025, and who died in a motorcycle accident in August 2025. It’s also the band’s first to feature new guitarist Nick Johnston as well as contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira.
Last month, the remaining founding members Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher released The Mastodon in the Room, where they reflect on good and bad times with their late singer-guitarist Hinds.
Mastodon will embark on the Poisonous Weapons Tour in support of the album. The North American trek kicks off Sept. 16 at Hard Rock Live in Orlando and wraps Oct. 24 at Sick New World in Fort Worth, Texas.
