The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has seen significant changes to its playoff structure over the years, with a notable overhaul formalized in November 2021 by the WNBA Board of Governors. This new system, implemented from the 2022 playoffs onward, aimed to enhance the competitive landscape and provide a more robust postseason experience. The 2023 WNBA season, which culminated in the Finals between the Las Vegas Aces and the New York
Liberty, operated under these revised rules, showcasing a departure from previous formats that included single-elimination games.
Shifting Away from Single-Elimination
Prior to the 2022 season, the WNBA playoffs featured single-elimination games in the first two rounds. This format meant that a team's championship aspirations could end abruptly after just one loss, adding a high-stakes element but potentially limiting opportunities for teams to recover from an off-night. The new system, however, scrapped these single-elimination games in favor of a best-of-three quarterfinal round. This change allowed for more strategic play and gave teams a chance to adjust and bounce back within a series.
Under the previous structure, from 2016 to 2021, higher-seeded teams received byes. Specifically, seeds 3 and 4 advanced directly to the second round, which was a single-game elimination, while seeds 1 and 2 received a bye all the way to the semifinals, which were best-of-five series. The 2021 changes eliminated these byes, ensuring that all eight playoff teams would begin postseason play in the first round, regardless of their regular season standing.
The 2023 Playoff Format in Detail
The 2023 playoffs, following the 2021 reforms, saw all eight qualifying teams seeded according to their overall regular season record, irrespective of conference affiliation. The matchups were structured as 1st seed vs. 8th, 2nd vs. 7th, 3rd vs. 6th, and 4th vs. 5th. In the first round, the higher-seeded team was granted home-court advantage, hosting games 1 and 2. If a third game was necessary to decide the series, the lower-seeded team would host it.
Moving into the semifinal round, the new system stipulated that no reseeding would occur. This meant that the winners of the 1 vs. 8 series would be paired with the winner of the 4 vs. 5 series, and similarly, the winners of the 2 vs. 7 series would face the winners of the 3 vs. 6 series. Both the semifinal and final rounds maintained their best-of-five series format. In these longer series, the higher-seeded team continued to hold a significant home-court advantage, hosting games 1, 2, and, if needed, game 5, while the lower-seeded team hosted games 3 and, if necessary, game 4.
Road to the 2023 Finals: Aces and Liberty Journeys
The Las Vegas Aces, who finished first in the regular season with an impressive 34–6 record, qualified for the 2023 Finals by defeating the Chicago Sky 2–0 in the first round and then sweeping the Dallas Wings 3–0 in the Semifinals. This marked their second consecutive Finals appearance and their third in four years, as they were also the defending WNBA Champions. The New York Liberty, securing the second seed with a 32–8 regular season record, reached the Finals by overcoming the Washington Mystics 2–0 in the first round and then defeating the Connecticut Sun 3–1 in the Semifinals. This was the Liberty's first appearance in the Finals since 2002, highlighting the impact of the competitive playoff structure on their journey.
