The rapid adoption of telematics across various sectors has highlighted a critical need for standardization, particularly in industries managing diverse fleets of machinery. The Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) has been at the forefront of this effort, developing the industry's first telematics standard. This initiative was born out of the challenges faced by end-users in integrating data from mixed fleets, which often comprised
machines from multiple manufacturers, each with its own proprietary telematics system. The establishment of a common standard has significantly streamlined data management, reduced operational complexities, and lowered integration costs for contractors and fleet managers.
The Genesis of Telematics Data Standards
Prior to the development of industry standards, integrating telematics data into existing fleet management reporting systems was a cumbersome and often expensive endeavor. End-users operating mixed fleets, consisting of various brands of machines and a mix of telematics-equipped and older legacy machines, had limited options. One common, yet inefficient, approach involved manually retrieving data from each manufacturer's telematics interface via multiple websites and then manually entering this information into their fleet management program's database. This process was not only labor-intensive but also prone to errors, making it an unsustainable solution for large-scale operations.
A second option involved developing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to integrate data from each telematics provider into a central database. While this automated the process, it was quite costly. Each telematics provider often had different procedures for accessing and retrieving data, and the data format varied significantly. This necessitated the development of a unique, custom API for each provider, making it an expensive solution. Furthermore, any time a new brand of machine or telematics device was added to the fleet, another API had to be developed, adding to the ongoing costs and complexity.
The AEMP Standard: A Collaborative Breakthrough
Recognizing these challenges, the AEMP brought together major construction equipment manufacturers and telematics providers in the heavy equipment industry in 2008. This collaborative effort aimed to develop the industry's first telematics standard. Following agreements from key players like Caterpillar, Volvo CE, Komatsu, and John Deere Construction & Forestry, the AEMP formed a standards development subcommittee. This committee, comprising developers from Virtual Site Solutions (a Caterpillar/Trimble joint venture), Volvo CE, and John Deere, worked diligently from February 2009 through September 2010.
The culmination of their efforts was the AEMP Telematics Data Standard V1.1, released in 2010 and officially going live on October 1, 2010. This standard focused on making key data elements—such as operating hours, location, fuel consumed, and odometer readings—available in a standardized XML format. By standardizing both the data format and the means of retrieval, the AEMP standard provided a fourth, more efficient option for end-users. Instead of requiring a unique API for each provider, users could now employ a single API to retrieve data from any participating telematics provider, significantly reducing integration development costs.
Evolution and Future of Telematics Standards
The AEMP Telematics Data Standard has continued to evolve. The current draft, known as the AEM/AEMP Draft Telematics API Standard, is a collaborative effort between AEMP and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). This new draft expands the original standard (Version 1.2) to include 19 data fields, with added fault code capability. It also changes how data is accessed, aiming to make it easier to consume and integrate with other systems and processes. This includes standardized communication protocols for transferring telematics information in mixed-equipment fleets to end-user business enterprise systems, allowing users to analyze asset data from diverse fleets without needing multiple telematics provider applications.
While this new draft standard does not yet cover all equipment types, such as agriculture equipment, cranes, or mobile elevating work platforms, it represents a significant step forward. To achieve global recognition and conformity, the AEM/AEMP Draft Telematics API Standard is slated for submission for acceptance by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This move towards a globally recognized standard underscores the industry's commitment to enhancing interoperability, efficiency, and data management across the heavy equipment sector worldwide.
