The New York Cosmos, across its three distinct iterations, offers a compelling case study in the business of professional soccer, particularly in the American context. From its initial founding by entertainment industry moguls to its current ownership structure focused on local development, the club's trajectory has been shaped by the vision and financial backing of various individuals and corporations. Understanding these ownership dynamics provides
insight into the ambitions, successes, and challenges faced by a club striving to establish soccer in a competitive sports landscape.
The Warner Communications Era: A Glamorous Beginning
The original New York Cosmos was founded in 1970 by a consortium of ten executives from Atlantic Records and its parent company, Warner Communications. This powerful backing was crucial to the club's early strategy and success. Key figures like Atlantic's Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun, along with Warner's CEO Steve Ross, were instrumental in its creation. Their vision extended beyond simply fielding a team; they aimed to make the Cosmos a global brand. This ambition was most evident in their willingness to invest heavily in acquiring international superstars such as Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer, transforming the team into "the most glamorous team in world football."
This financial commitment from Warner Communications allowed the Cosmos to dominate the North American Soccer League (NASL), winning five league titles. The economic power of the club was such that it could assemble a roster with players from 16 different nationalities. However, despite the on-field success and high attendance figures, the financial model proved unsustainable in the long run. The club ultimately folded in 1985, largely due to the demise of the NASL and the financial difficulties that plagued both the league and the team, including floundering attendance for its Major Indoor Soccer League team.
The Second Iteration and Rights Ownership
After the original club's dissolution, the New York Cosmos name and identity remained a valuable asset. A second iteration of the club played parts of six seasons between 2013 and 2020. This period saw Rocco B. Commisso, who was also a majority owner of Serie A's ACF Fiorentina, acquire and hold the rights to the Cosmos' name and identity from 2017 onwards. While this team achieved some on-field success, it also faced significant challenges, including poor attendance, mismanagement, lawsuits, and unpaid bills, leading to its eventual second hiatus.
The Current Ownership and Future Direction
The second hiatus became permanent in 2025 when Rocco B. Commisso sold majority rights over the club's intellectual property. This transaction led to the formation of the third and current iteration of the New York Cosmos, founded on February 14, 2025. The club is now majority-owned by real estate developer Baye Adofo-Wilson. Other owners include the Paterson Restoration Corporation, Erik Stover (a former executive with Red Bull and the second Cosmos), Giuseppe Rossi, and Mediacom. Commisso remained a minority owner through his company, New York Cosmos LLC, until his passing on January 16, 2026.
This new ownership group has articulated a clear strategic direction. While the club "nominally identifies with New York," there is a strong emphasis on developing soccer in New Jersey, particularly in the Paterson area. This focus on local development and community engagement, as highlighted by Vice Chairman Giuseppe Rossi, suggests a more grounded business model aimed at long-term sustainability within the USL League One, where the club currently competes.
