Contemplative neuroscience represents a fascinating and relatively new field that seeks to understand the intricate relationship between contemplative practices, such as meditation, and their effects on the human mind and brain. This interdisciplinary area draws from neurology, physiology, epigenetics, and the study of mental states characterized by attentiveness, compassion, calmness, and altruism, alongside bodily awareness. Its development has
been a journey from early observations to sophisticated scientific inquiry, marked by significant milestones and the involvement of influential figures who recognized the potential for a scientific exploration of these profound human experiences.
Early Explorations and Foundational Work
The roots of contemplative neuroscience can be traced back to the 1970s and 1980s, an era when researchers began to systematically investigate the physiological and psychological impacts of meditation. During this period, pioneers like Arthur J. Deikman conducted experiments where subjects observed objects, such as a blue vase, while attempting to suppress thoughts and bodily sensations. This early work, though lacking advanced neuroimaging techniques, laid crucial groundwork. Researchers like B. Alan Wallace, Richard Davidson, and Daniel Goleman also commenced their studies in this nascent field, focusing on measurable physiological parameters. These included oxygen consumption, skin resistance, and EEG spectra, alongside emotional states assessed through standardized questionnaires. They also delved into Buddhist and Zen descriptions of contemplative and meditative states of consciousness, beginning to differentiate between altered states of consciousness and long-term changes in character traits.
This foundational period was characterized by a reliance on more traditional physiological measurements and a deep engagement with the philosophical and experiential accounts of meditation. The absence of modern neuro-imaging tools meant that the scientific community had to infer brain activity from these indirect measures. However, this early commitment to empirical observation, combined with an openness to ancient wisdom traditions, set the stage for the more technologically advanced research that would follow. The insights gained from these initial studies were vital in establishing the credibility of investigating meditation through a scientific lens.
The Mind and Life Institute and the Dawn of a New Era
A pivotal moment in the history of contemplative neuroscience arrived in the 2000s with the advent of new investigative instruments, such as fMRI, and novel neurostimulation techniques. This technological leap enabled a more direct and detailed examination of brain activity during contemplative practices. A key institution driving this new era was the Mind and Life Institute (MLI), founded in 1987 by the 14th Dalai Lama, American social entrepreneur Adam Engle, and Chilean neuroscientist Francisco Varela. The MLI became instrumental in fostering dialogues and scientific programs that brought together contemplative practitioners and scientists.
One such groundbreaking program was launched during the first public MLI dialogue, titled “Investigating the Mind,” held at MIT in 2003. This event, attended by 1,200 scientists and contemplatives, featured prominent figures including the 14th Dalai Lama, Nobel laureate economist Daniel Kahneman, and Eric Lander, director of the MIT Center for Genome Research. This conference is widely regarded as marking the public birth of contemplative neuroscience in the United States, signaling a significant shift towards mainstream scientific acceptance and inquiry into these practices. The collaboration between spiritual leaders and leading scientists underscored the seriousness and potential of this emerging field.
Fostering Research and Education
Following the success of the 2003 MIT dialogue, the Mind and Life Institute continued to expand its initiatives to support and disseminate research in contemplative neuroscience. In 2004, the MLI launched its annual Mind and Life Summer Research Institute (MLSRI) at the Garrison Institute. This program was designed to offer a curriculum on contemplative neuroscience to graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and science faculty, thereby nurturing the next generation of scholars in the field. The MLI also established the Francisco J. Varela Research Awards, providing competitive funding for pilot studies aimed at exploring the applications of contemplative practices.
These educational and funding programs have been held annually since 2004, demonstrating a sustained commitment to building the scientific infrastructure for contemplative neuroscience. Further solidifying its presence, the MLI held its second public dialogue in 2005 in Washington D.C., focusing on “The Science and Clinical Applications of Meditation.” This event was co-sponsored by Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University Medical Center, highlighting the growing recognition of the clinical relevance of meditation research. Through these concerted efforts, contemplative neuroscience has evolved from a niche area of study into a recognized and actively researched scientific discipline, continuously exploring the profound connections between mind, brain, and contemplative experience.
