Test anxiety, a significant barrier to academic success, has been formally studied since the early 1950s, leading to various theoretical frameworks that attempt to explain its mechanisms. Early researchers like George Mandler and Seymour Sarason developed a theory positing that anxiety during testing situations is a crucial determinant of test performance. Their work highlighted that individuals with high test anxiety typically perform worse than
their low-anxiety peers, especially under stressful evaluative conditions such as post-secondary exams. This performance difference is largely attributed to how attention is managed during the test.
Attentional Theories and Performance Disruption
Attentional theories suggest that the feelings of forgetfulness or "drawing a blank" experienced by anxious test-takers arise from anxiety-produced interference. This interference occurs between relevant responses needed for the test and irrelevant responses generated by the person's anxious state. Essentially, a low-anxious test-taker can focus greater attention on the tasks required by the test, while a high-anxious test-taker's attention is divided. Their focus shifts inward, concentrating on their internal self and the anxiety they are feeling, rather than solely on the test material. This division of attention prevents them from adequately performing, as their full cognitive resources are not dedicated to the task at hand. Anxiousness is particularly evoked when a student believes that an evaluative situation, such as an assessment, exceeds their intellectual, motivational, and social capabilities.
Psychologists Liebert and Morris, in 1967, further refined the understanding of test anxiety by analyzing its structure into two distinct factors: Cognitive Test Anxiety and Emotionality. This distinction helps to differentiate between the mental and physical aspects of the condition, providing a more nuanced view of how test anxiety manifests and impacts individuals. Understanding these components is crucial for developing targeted interventions and support strategies for students struggling with this pervasive issue.
Emotionality: The Physiological Response to Evaluation
Emotionality, as defined by Liebert and Morris, refers to the high levels of various symptoms related to test anxiety that are observable through physiological responses during evaluative situations like exams. These physiological manifestations can include an increased galvanic skin response, an elevated heart rate, dizziness, nausea, or even feelings of panic. There is clear evidence that emotionality is a distinct part of test anxiety. However, its association with declining performance is most pronounced when an individual also experiences high levels of worry. This suggests that while the physical symptoms are distressing, the cognitive component often amplifies their debilitating effect on performance.
Anxiety reactions can also be generalized from previous experiences to new testing situations. Feelings of inadequacy, helplessness, and anticipations of punishment or loss of status and esteem can all trigger anxiety responses. The presence of an audience, for example, can further debilitate the performance of highly anxious test-takers, while paradoxically increasing the performance of those with low anxiety. Individuals who score high on anxiety scales often describe themselves in negative, self-devaluing terms and are significantly more likely to blame themselves for failure compared to their low-anxiety counterparts.
Cognitive Test Anxiety: The Role of Worry and Self-Beliefs
Cognitive Test Anxiety, also known as worry, primarily encompasses an individual's cognitive reactions to evaluative situations before, during, and after these tasks. Students with high cognitive test anxiety are often preoccupied with thoughts such as comparing their performance to peers, contemplating the consequences of failure, exhibiting low confidence in their abilities, excessively worrying about grades, feeling unprepared for tests, and experiencing a loss of self-worth. Researchers have found that a low academic self-concept is strongly associated with higher worry and tension regarding one's ability to perform well on a test. A student's metacognitive beliefs, or their beliefs about their own thinking processes, play a significant role in maintaining these negative self-beliefs.
The relationship between anxiety and performance can be understood through the Yerkes-Dodson Law, which illustrates the facilitating and debilitating effects of arousal on performance as an inverted "U" curve. For instance, a moderate degree of arousal or anxiety can be beneficial for a child taking a test, providing the necessary motivation to prepare and perform. However, if a child's anxiety level exceeds this optimal point before or during a test, it can disrupt preparation and cause such distress that it impairs their performance, preventing them from demonstrating their true abilities.
