Unlike a physiological reflex, an operant is a class of responses that, while structurally distinct (e.g., a rat pressing a lever with different paws), are functionally equivalent because they produce the same outcome. This distinction was crucial for Skinner, moving beyond the simple stimulus-response (S-R) theories of earlier researchers like Thorndike and Guthrie. The practical application of radical behaviorism is known as applied behavior analysis (ABA). This field has emerged as a thriving area, utilized in diverse contexts ranging from applied animal behavior and organizational behavior management to the treatment of developmental differences like autism and issues such as substance abuse. While behaviorism and cognitive psychology have theoretical disagreements, they have found common ground in cognitive-behavioral therapies. These therapies have proven effective in treating various pathologies, including simple phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and mood disorders, showcasing a complementary relationship despite their differing theoretical foundations.
