Paul Dresser's life, as depicted in the film "My Gal Sal," was a colorful journey from a strict Indiana upbringing to the bustling music scene of New York City's Tin Pan Alley. Against his father's wishes for him to become a minister, Dresser pursued a career in music, a path that led him through various adventures and romantic entanglements. His story is one of ambition, artistic development, and the often-turbulent nature of relationships in the entertainment
world of the late 1800s.
Early Beginnings and Unforeseen Detours
Paul Dresser's musical aspirations began with a rebellious act: running away from his Indiana home. His first foray into entertainment, however, was far from glamorous. He was unknowingly used by a con man as a front to sell fake jewelry. This unfortunate incident culminated in him being tarred and feathered by an angry mob, a harsh introduction to the realities of the road. Fortunately, he was found and nursed back to health by Mae Collins, a singer in Colonel Truckee's traveling medicine show, marking a significant turning point in his early career.Joining the medicine show, Paul continued to hone his craft. During a stop in Buffalo, New York, he encountered a group of entertainers from New York City, including the prominent singing star Sally Elliott and her producer, Fred Haviland. Initially, Paul was offended by their laughter at his gaudy suit and energetic performance. However, Sally's interest in one of his tunes and Fred's offer of tickets to her Broadway show piqued his curiosity. Despite an initial attempt at revenge by laughing at Sally's show with Mae, Paul was ultimately impressed by the high quality of her performance, solidifying his determination to be taken seriously as a musician.
Ascending to Tin Pan Alley
Driven by his ambition, Paul left the medicine show and Mae behind, heading for New York City. Upon his arrival, he discovered that Sally had stolen a song he had played in Buffalo, adding her own lyrics. This led him to music publisher Pat Howley, with whom he signed a contract and worked to reclaim his rights to the song. Pat, recognizing the potential for Paul's career, convinced him that an association with Sally could help him establish his name. This strategic move led to Paul becoming Sally's personal songwriter, a pivotal role that would define much of his professional and personal life.Paul's collaboration with Sally quickly yielded success, producing a string of hits. Their professional relationship soon blossomed into a romantic one, with Paul developing strong feelings for Sally. After a party celebrating the success of their song "Come Tell Me What's Your Answer, Yes or No," Paul offered to accompany Sally to her hotel, and they eventually shared a kiss. He even took a suite across from hers, further cementing their closeness. One evening, Sally returned to her suite to find Paul writing a new song, "Here You Are," at her piano, leading to a shared performance and another kiss.
Tumultuous Romance and Reconciliation
Despite their professional and romantic success, Paul's newfound fame began to affect his judgment. His success went to his head, and he started to neglect Sally in favor of pursuing the married Countess Mariana Rossini. This infidelity led to a dramatic confrontation where Sally, furious, cut up his new suits. Paul retaliated by destroying her dresses, resulting in his arrest. Shortly after his release from jail, Paul declined an invitation from the Countess and reconciled with Sally. Their relationship seemed to be back on track when Paul proposed to Sally while they were stuck on a Ferris wheel, and she accepted. However, their reconciliation was short-lived. That same night, Paul discovered that the Countess's husband had challenged him to a duel, which turned out to be a ploy by the Countess to see him again. When Sally witnessed the Countess dropping Paul off at the hotel the next morning, she assumed the worst and broke off their engagement. As Sally went on tour, she refused to sing Paul's music, and his latest song flopped. A music broker in San Francisco eventually tricked Sally into performing Paul's new song, "My Gal Sal," by claiming an unknown Southern composer wrote it. After her performance, Paul surprised her in her dressing room, revealing he was the true composer. After much bickering, the two finally reconciled, bringing their tumultuous journey to a harmonious close.
