Simone Arianne Biles, widely recognized as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, was born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio. Her early life was marked by significant challenges and transitions that ultimately shaped her path. As the third of four children born to Shanon Biles and Kelvin Clemons, Simone's childhood began in circumstances that led to intervention from social services. Early Challenges and Family Transitions
When Simone was just two years old, and her younger sister Adria had recently been born, neighbors observed the four children frequently playing unsupervised in the street. This prompted a call to social services, leading to the children being placed in foster care. During her time in foster care, Simone reportedly watched the biological children of her foster parents perform acrobatics on a backyard trampoline with great interest, hinting at her future passion. Upon learning of his grandchildren's situation, Simone's maternal grandfather, Ronald Biles, intervened, retrieving them with the assistance of a social worker. In March 2000, the four grandchildren moved to Spring, north of Houston, Texas, to live with Ronald and his second wife, Nellie, who already had two sons, Ron II and Adam, aged sixteen and fourteen respectively.
Adoption and a New Home
Months after the children moved in with their grandparents, their biological mother expressed a desire to regain custody. A social worker placed the siblings in foster care in Ohio while their mother's fitness was assessed. However, after a year, Shanon Biles was unable to pass consecutive drug screening tests, rendering the children eligible for adoption. While the two older siblings, Ashley and Tevin, chose to remain closer to their mother in Ohio, Simone and her younger sister Adria returned to Texas to live with Ronald and Nellie Biles around Christmas in 2002. Ronald and Nellie officially adopted Simone and Adria on November 7, 2003, providing them with a stable and permanent home.
The Discovery of Gymnastics
Simone's introduction to gymnastics was somewhat serendipitous. Her uncle, Adam, who was also her older adopted brother and a daycare monitor for Simone and Adria, suggested a change of plans for a school outing. A planned farm visit was canceled due to rainy weather, and Adam proposed a gymnastics session at Bannon's Gymnastix in Houston instead. It was during this visit that Simone and Adria first encountered gymnastics equipment. Simone's natural aptitude was immediately recognized by a staff member at the gym, who enrolled her in the club by providing a form for her parents. Simone Biles began gymnastics at the age of six, an age considered relatively late for starting a high-level gymnastics career. Her mother saw recreational gymnastics as an ideal outlet for her energy and talent. From these humble beginnings, a legendary career would soon unfold.
