X-15 Flight 91, an American crewed sub-orbital spaceflight that took place on August 22, 1963, marked a significant achievement in aerospace history. Piloted by Joseph A. Walker, this mission was notable for being the highest flight ever achieved by the X-15 program. It also represented Walker's second spaceflight within the program, building on his previous success just a month earlier. The flight pushed the boundaries of human-piloted space travel,
setting an altitude record for a spaceplane that would stand for nearly two decades.
A Record-Setting Altitude
On August 22, 1963, Joseph A. Walker piloted the X-15 aircraft to an impressive altitude of 107.96 kilometers (approximately 67.08 miles). This achievement made Flight 91 the highest crewed flight by a spaceplane up to that point in time. The altitude surpassed the Kármán line, an internationally recognized boundary of space, making it a true spaceflight. This record remained unbroken until the Space Shuttle Columbia's flight in 1981, underscoring the pioneering nature of the X-15 program and Flight 91 in particular.
The mission's duration was relatively brief, lasting 11 minutes and 8.6 seconds from launch to landing. During this short but impactful flight, Walker experienced approximately five minutes of weightlessness, a crucial aspect of sub-orbital spaceflight. The total distance traveled during the mission was 543.4 kilometers (about 337.7 miles), demonstrating the X-15's capability for extensive high-altitude maneuvers.
The Reused Spacecraft and Mission Details
Flight 91 was also significant as the first internationally recognized spaceflight of a reused spacecraft. Joseph A. Walker had previously flown the same X-15 plane, number three, on Flight 90 a month earlier, which also crossed the Kármán line. This demonstrated the reusability concept for advanced aerospace vehicles, a precursor to later space programs.
The flight commenced with an air-launch from a modified Boeing B-52 Stratofortress support plane. This launch method allowed the X-15 to begin its powered flight at a higher altitude and speed, conserving its own fuel for the ascent to extreme heights. The launch occurred over Smith Ranch Dry Lake, Nevada, United States. After its sub-orbital journey, Walker successfully landed the X-15 at Rogers Dry Lake, located at Edwards Air Force Base in California, approximately 12 minutes after its initial launch. This mission marked Joseph A. Walker's final flight in the X-15 program, concluding his remarkable contributions to high-altitude and space research.
