These cognitive biases represent systematic patterns of deviation from what might be considered normal or rational judgment. Attributions are the judgments and assumptions people form about why others act in certain ways. However, these judgments are not always objective and can lead to skewed interpretations. For instance, if a driver cuts someone off, the person who was cut off is more likely to blame the reckless driver's inherent personality traits, such as being rude or incompetent, rather than considering situational circumstances, like the driver being late for work and not paying attention. These biases are a common part of everyday life.
The Fundamental Attribution Error Explained
A prominent example of an attribution bias is the fundamental attribution error. This bias describes the tendency to overemphasize personal traits and underplay situational factors when explaining the behaviors of others. For example, if someone sees a coworker bump into another person on the way to a meeting, they might attribute this behavior to the coworker's carelessness or hastiness, rather than considering that the coworker might have been running late. Early research, such as a study involving participants evaluating an anti-Castro writer, showed that people often did not account for situational factors, thus providing evidence for this error.
Psychologist Fritz Heider, in his 1958 book *The Psychology of Interpersonal Relations*, laid the groundwork for attribution theory and biases. He noted that people tend to distinguish between behaviors caused by personal disposition versus environmental or situational conditions. He predicted that individuals are more likely to explain others' behavior in terms of dispositional factors, focusing on personality, while often overlooking the surrounding situational demands. This tendency highlights how deeply ingrained the fundamental attribution error can be in our social perceptions.
Cognitive Versus Motivational Roots of Bias
While early researchers often explained attribution biases as primarily cognitively driven, stemming from information processing constraints, later studies introduced a motivational component. Supporters of the "cognitive model" argued that biases were a product of how humans process information. Michael Storms, a Yale psychologist, proposed this cognitive explanation following his 1973 study on social perception. His experiment showed that participants ascribed more causal influence to the person they were looking at, suggesting that the information people have access to influences their attributions.
However, in the early 1980s, research began to demonstrate that motives also play a role in driving attribution biases. Researchers like Ziva Kunda argued that certain biases appear when people face motivational pressures, suggesting they cannot be explained solely by objective cognitive processes. More specifically, people are more likely to construct biased social judgments when they are motivated to reach a particular conclusion, as long as they can justify it. This indicates that our desires and emotions can affect how we interpret social information, adding another layer of complexity to understanding attribution biases.
