Competing on the PGA Tour
Zaharias's initial foray into men's professional golf included a PGA Tour event in 1938, where she missed the cut. However, as she gained more experience and honed her golf skills, her performance in these events dramatically improved. By January 1945, Zaharias made history by playing in three PGA tournaments and successfully making the initial cut in all of them, a feat that, as of 2023, no other woman has accomplished. Her impressive run began at the Los Angeles Open, where she shot rounds of 76 and 76 to qualify. She then made the two-day cut in the tournament itself with scores of 76 and 81, though she ultimately missed the three-day cut after carding a 79.
Her success continued at the Phoenix Open, where she finished in 33rd place with rounds of 77, 72, 75, and 80. Following this, at the Tucson Open, Zaharias qualified by shooting 74 and 81, and then completed the tournament with a total of 307, tying for 42nd place. These performances were particularly notable because, unlike other female golfers who might have received sponsor's exemptions to play in men's events, Zaharias earned her spots in the Los Angeles and Tucson Opens through rigorous 36-hole qualifiers. This distinction underscored her merit-based entry and her ability to genuinely compete against male professionals.
Facing and Overcoming Obstacles
Despite her demonstrated ability to compete with men, Zaharias encountered resistance from the golf establishment. In 1948, she became the first woman to attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, a major championship traditionally reserved for men. However, her application was rejected by the United States Golf Association (USGA), which explicitly stated that the event was intended to be open to men only.
