Sammy Sosa's illustrious baseball career, while marked by incredible home run records and MVP awards, also encountered significant controversies and physical challenges, particularly in its later stages. These incidents, ranging from on-field infractions to unusual injuries, cast a different light on the final years of his time in Major League Baseball. Despite these hurdles, Sosa continued to demonstrate his power-hitting capabilities, even as his overall
production began to decline.
The Corked Bat Incident of 2003
One of the most notable controversies in Sammy Sosa's career occurred on June 3, 2003, during a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In the first inning, umpires ejected Sosa from the game after discovering he had been using a corked bat. This incident immediately drew national attention and raised questions about fair play. Major League Baseball subsequently confiscated and tested 76 of Sosa's other bats, all of which were found to be clean and without cork. Additionally, five bats he had previously sent to the Hall of Fame were also tested and found to be clean.
Sosa publicly stated that he had accidentally used the corked bat, claiming it was a bat he only used during batting practice. He issued an apology for the incident. Cubs manager Dusty Baker, when interviewed, emphasized that any use of corked bats by his team was strictly prohibited. As a consequence of the incident, Sosa was initially suspended for eight games without pay, a penalty that was later reduced to seven games without pay after an appeal on June 11. Despite the controversy, Sosa finished the 2003 season with 40 home runs and added two more in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the Florida Marlins, though the Cubs ultimately lost the series in seven games.
Injuries and Unceremonious Departure from the Cubs
Beyond the corked bat incident, Sammy Sosa also faced unusual physical setbacks in his later career. In May 2004, he suffered an odd injury while sitting next to his locker and chatting with reporters before a game at Petco Park in San Diego. A very violent sneeze caused severe back pain, leading to a diagnosis of back spasms and placement on the disabled list. This injury contributed to a season where his home run total, 35, was significantly lower than his peak years.
Sosa's tenure with the Chicago Cubs came to an unceremonious end at the close of the 2004 season. He did not play in the final regular-season game, which was held in Chicago, reportedly at his request. Sosa claimed he had permission from manager Dusty Baker to sit out, while Baker stated that an assistant trainer, acting as an intermediary, informed him that Sosa felt injured and wanted out of the game, though Baker expected him to be on the bench with other non-starters. Sosa reportedly left Wrigley Field before the game concluded. Despite his declining production and eventual release from the team, between 1995 and 2004, Sosa clubbed 479 home runs, which remains the most home runs by a player in history over a 10-year span. He also holds numerous team records for the Cubs and the major-league record for the most home runs hit in a month, with 20 in June 1998. After his departure from the Cubs, Sosa played for the Baltimore Orioles in 2005 and made his final MLB appearance with the Texas Rangers in 2007.
