Road America stands as a prominent motorsport road course nestled near Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, in the United States. This permanent road circuit, inaugurated in September 1955, has become a cornerstone of American racing, hosting a diverse array of events annually. Situated on a sprawling 2.56 square kilometer terrain, approximately midway between the cities of Milwaukee and Green Bay, its location near the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive adds to its picturesque
setting. The circuit is recognized internationally, holding an FIA Grade 2 accreditation, which signifies its capability to host major international racing events.
Enduring Original Configuration and Challenging Layout
One of Road America's most remarkable attributes is its preservation of its original configuration. It is one of the few road circuits globally that has maintained its initial design, spanning 4.048 miles (6.515 km) with 14 turns. This commitment to its heritage ensures that racers continue to face the same challenges and thrills that have defined the track for decades. The circuit's layout is characterized by significant elevation changes, adding a dynamic element to the racing experience. These undulations test drivers' skills and provide exciting viewing opportunities for spectators.
Adding to its challenge, the track features a long front stretch where speeds can approach 320 km/h (approximately 200 mph). This high-speed section demands precision and courage from drivers, often leading to dramatic overtakes and intense competition. Another iconic feature is the 11th turn, located at the rear of the circuit and famously known as "the Kink." This particular turn is renowned for its difficulty and has become a legendary part of Road America's lore, further cementing its reputation as a demanding and respected racing venue.
A Hub for Diverse Motorsport Events
Road America is a vibrant hub for motorsport, hosting around 400 events each year. Among these, nine major public weekends draw significant crowds, offering a wide spectrum of racing disciplines. These events include MotoAmerica (AMA FIM) races, vintage car competitions, and races organized by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The circuit also welcomes professional series such as the United Sports Car Racing Series and the Pirelli World Challenge, showcasing a broad range of automotive performance.
In recent years, Road America has seen the return of prestigious series, with the IndyCar Series reappearing in 2016 and the NASCAR Cup Series in 2021. These additions highlight the circuit's continued relevance and appeal to top-tier racing organizations. Furthermore, it hosts the NASCAR Xfinity Series, demonstrating its versatility in accommodating various levels of stock car racing. The ability to host such a diverse calendar of events underscores Road America's importance in the North American motorsport landscape.
Spectator Experience and Additional Facilities
Road America offers an exceptional spectator experience, allowing fans to choose their preferred viewing spots around the entire circuit. Beyond traditional grandstands, the venue provides permanent hillside seating, capable of accommodating crowds exceeding 150,000 people. This unique setup allows for a more immersive and flexible viewing experience, enabling fans to find their ideal vantage point to witness the racing action. The expansive grounds and varied terrain contribute to a festival-like atmosphere during major events.
Beyond the main track, the Road America complex also includes the CTECH Manufacturing Motorplex. This facility features a 0.8-mile (1.3 km) karting track, providing another avenue for motorsport enthusiasts to engage with racing, whether as participants or spectators. The presence of this karting track further diversifies the offerings at Road America, catering to a broader audience interested in motorsports at different scales.
