Kittens, the juvenile form of domestic cats, are born in a state of primary altriciality, meaning they are entirely dependent on their mothers for survival during their initial weeks. This period is marked by rapid physical and social development, transforming them from helpless newborns into curious, exploring young animals. Birth and Initial Dependency
Typically, a feline litter consists of two to five kittens, though litters ranging from one to over ten are known. The gestation period for kittens usually lasts between 64 and 67 days, with an average of 66 days. At birth, kittens emerge encased in a sac called the amnion, which the mother cat instinctively bites off and consumes. This initial act is crucial for the kittens' survival.
For the first several weeks of their lives, kittens are unable to urinate or defecate without their mother's stimulation. They also lack the ability to regulate their own body temperature for approximately the first three weeks. This makes them highly vulnerable to hypothermia if born in temperatures below 27 °C (81 °F) and not kept warm by their mother. The mother's milk is vital during this time, providing essential nutrition and transferring antibodies that protect the kittens against infectious diseases. Due to their inability to urinate independently, kittens have a very high requirement for fluids, which the mother's milk supplies.
Sensory Development and Exploration
Kittens are born blind, with their eyes typically opening about seven to ten days after birth. Initially, their retina is poorly developed, resulting in poor vision. It takes approximately ten weeks for kittens to achieve vision comparable to that of adult cats. Around two weeks of age, kittens begin to develop quickly, and their coordination and strength improve significantly. This is when they start to explore the world beyond their immediate nest.
As they progress through their early weeks, kittens engage in play-fighting with their littermates, a crucial activity for developing their physical skills and social boundaries. They also begin to learn self-grooming and mutual grooming from their mother and siblings. Their innate predatory abilities start to manifest through play hunting and stalking games. The mother cat or other adult cats play a significant role in honing these skills by bringing live prey to the nest, and later, by demonstrating hunting techniques for the kittens to emulate.
Weaning and Socialization
Around three to four weeks old, kittens are gradually weaned from their mother's milk and begin to eat solid food. Weaning is usually completed by six to eight weeks of age. During this period, they also start to lose their baby teeth, with a complete set of adult teeth typically present by nine months. While they primarily subsist on solid food after weaning, kittens may continue to suckle occasionally until they are separated from their mothers. Some mother cats will disperse their kittens as early as three months, while others continue to care for them until they approach sexual maturity.
Kittens are highly social animals and spend a significant portion of their waking hours interacting with other animals and playing independently. Play with other kittens reaches its peak during the third or fourth month after birth. More solitary hunting and stalking play tends to peak later, around five months of age. Domestic kittens generally enjoy human companionship, highlighting their social nature. However, their curious and exploratory nature can make them vulnerable; they often seek out dark hiding places, which can sometimes lead to dangerous situations if they are not carefully supervised.
Transition to Adulthood
While domestic kittens are often sent to new homes between six and eight weeks of age, research suggests that remaining with their mother and littermates from six to twelve weeks is important for their social and behavioral development. For this reason, breeders and foster or rescue homes typically do not sell or adopt out kittens younger than twelve weeks. In many jurisdictions, it is even illegal to give away kittens younger than eight weeks. Kittens generally reach sexual maturity around seven months of age and are considered to have reached full "adulthood" around one year old. This extended period with their early family contributes to their overall well-being and helps them develop into well-adjusted adult cats.
