Before the monumental Panama Canal carved its path through the Central American isthmus, another ambitious project laid the groundwork for transcontinental transit: the Panama Canal Railway. Conceived in the mid-19th century, this railway was a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance, ultimately becoming a critical precursor to the canal itself. Its story is one of immense challenges, financial gambles, and eventual triumph, profoundly influencing
global trade and the very selection of Panama as the site for the future canal.
The Panama Railroad company was incorporated in the State of New York in January 1849, with William Henry Aspinwall at its helm and an initial capital of $1,000,000. The early days were fraught with difficulties, including a flawed initial survey. The directors faced a challenge when George Law, owner of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, attempted to force his way onto the board by buying land options. In response, the company decided to establish its Atlantic terminus and harbor facilities on the vacant site of Manzanillo Island, which would later become the city of Aspinwall, now known as Colón. This marshy islet, covered with mangrove trees, presented an immediate and formidable obstacle to construction.
Overcoming Formidable Obstacles and Financial Peril
Construction began in May 1850, and the scale of the challenge quickly became apparent. The initial eight miles of the proposed route traversed a jungle of gelatinous swamps, teeming with alligators. The environment was stiflingly hot, plagued by mosquitoes and sandflies, and subjected to deluges of up to three yards of rain for nearly half the year, forcing some workers to labor in swamp water up to four feet deep. Building a railroad near Aspinwall required over 200 feet of gravel backfill in places, sourced from a quarry near Porto Bello, Panama, and transported by barges.
The technology of the era meant that most of the work was manual. Beyond a steam-driven pile driver, steam tugs, and steam locomotives with gondola and dump cars for fill material, laborers wielded machetes, axes, picks, shovels, black powder, and mule carts. The roadbed continuously sank into the swamp, necessitating constant backfilling. The first solid ground, at what was then called Monkey Hill (now Mount Hope), soon became a cemetery due to the devastating toll of diseases like cholera, yellow fever, and malaria. The worst year was 1852, when cholera swept through, claiming nearly all of Chief Engineer George Totten's staff, including 51 engineers, surveyors, and draftsmen. Founding owner John Lloyd Stephens died of malaria, and even Ulysses S. Grant's regiment suffered over 150 deaths from cholera during their crossing.
After almost 20 months of work, the Panama Railroad had laid about eight miles of track and spent its entire initial $1,000,000 to cross the swamps to Gatún. The project's fortunes dramatically shifted in November 1851 when two large paddle steamers, the SS Georgia and the SS Philadelphia, carrying about 1,000 passengers, were forced to shelter in Bahía Limón due to a Caribbean hurricane. With the railroad's docks completed and eight miles of track laid to Gatún, the company could transport the ships' passengers and cargo by rail. Desperate gold seekers paid $0.50 per mile and $3.00 per 100 pounds of luggage, providing a crucial infusion of money that saved the company and enabled it to raise more capital. The railway began passenger and freight operations even with 40 miles of track still to be laid, boosting its franchise value and allowing it to sell more stock to finance the remainder of the project, which ultimately cost over $8,000,000 and between 5,000 and 10,000 workers' lives.
Completion, Upgrades, and Enduring Legacy
By July 1852, 23 miles of track reached the Chagres River, where a massive bridge was needed. The first wooden bridge failed when the river rose over 40 feet in a single day, leading to the construction of a much higher, 300-foot-long iron bridge that took over a year to complete. In total, the company built more than 170 bridges and culverts. In January 1854, excavation began at the Culebra Cut, where the Continental Divide required a cut 20 to 40 feet deep over 2,500 feet. The Atlantic side of the road over the crest was completed in January 1855, with 37 miles of track from Aspinwall (Colón). Simultaneously, a second team, working from Panama City on the Pacific side, completed its 11 miles to the summit.
On January 27, 1855, Chief Engineer George M. Totten drove the final spike, completing the 47-mile, 3,020-foot (76 km) railway. The next day, the first locomotive carried freight and passengers from sea to sea. The railway's maximum grade was 60 feet to the mile (1.14%), and its summit grade was 258.64 feet above the Atlantic terminus. Initially, it used a 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge, common among southern U.S. railway companies at the time, which remained until a 2001 rebuild. Hastily erected wooden bridges were replaced with iron, and pine ties, which lasted only about a year, were upgraded to lignum vitae, a wood so hard it required drilling for screw spikes. The line was eventually double-tracked.
The Panama Canal Railway became one of the most profitable railways globally and was hailed as an engineering marvel. Until the opening of the Panama Canal, it carried the heaviest volume of freight per unit length of any railroad in the world. Its very existence was a key factor in the selection of Panama as the site for the canal. In 1881, the French Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique acquired a controlling interest, and in 1904, the United States government under Theodore Roosevelt purchased the railway from the French canal company. At the time, its assets included about 75 miles of track, 35 locomotives, 30 passenger cars, and 900 freight cars, though much of this equipment was worn out or obsolete.
