In the event of a fire, the heat would melt the solder, allowing water to flow and extinguish the flames.
Parmelee's system was a significant improvement over previous fire suppression methods, which were often manual and less effective. His invention was the first to automate the process, ensuring a quicker response to fires and minimizing damage. The Mathushek Piano Manufacturing Co. became the first building in the United States to be equipped with such a system, marking a milestone in fire safety technology.

Despite the effectiveness of his invention, Parmelee faced challenges in gaining widespread adoption. The cost of installing the sprinkler system was prohibitive for many businesses, limiting its initial reach. Although Parmelee's invention did not achieve immediate widespread adoption, it laid the foundation for future advancements in fire suppression technology. His work inspired others, such as Frederick Grinnell, who improved upon the design and achieved greater success in the market. Grinnell's version of the sprinkler system became more popular, eventually leading to the withdrawal of Parmelee's original design.
Today, automatic fire sprinkler systems are a critical component of building safety, credited with controlling over 99% of fires in protected buildings.
