The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment, often simply called the Marshmallow Test, is a renowned psychological study conducted in 1970 by psychologist Walter Mischel at Stanford University. This experiment aimed to understand children's ability to delay gratification and how this skill might relate to their future functioning as adults. The core of the test involved offering children a choice between an immediate small reward or a larger reward if they
could wait for a short period. The findings from this initial research and subsequent follow-up studies have significantly influenced our understanding of self-control and its potential impact on life trajectories.
The Original Experiment's Design
The setup for the Marshmallow Test was straightforward yet insightful. A child was placed alone in a room and presented with a single marshmallow. The experimenter then explained that they would leave the room for approximately 15 minutes. The child was given a choice: they could eat the marshmallow immediately, or if they waited until the experimenter returned without eating it, they would receive a second marshmallow or a pretzel stick, depending on their preference. This simple choice created a situation where the child's capacity for self-control and delayed gratification could be observed directly.
The researchers, including Mischel, hypothesized that any activity that diverted the participants' attention from the anticipated reward would increase the time they could delay gratification. They specifically expected that overt activities, internal cognitive processes, and fantasy play would aid in this self-distraction. They also theorized that through such self-distraction, participants could transform the frustrating nature of the waiting situation into something less aversive psychologically. To test these expectations, the researchers devised three conditions for testing participants: overt activity, covert activity, or no activity at all. They predicted that delay of gratification would increase under overt and covert activity conditions but decrease in the no-activity condition.
Participants and Procedure
The participants for the first experiment were 50 children, comprising 25 boys and 25 girls, from the Bing Nursery School at Stanford University. Their ages ranged from 3 years 6 months to 5 years 6 months, with a median age of 4 years 6 months. Six participants were excluded because they could not understand the instructions given by the experimenter. Notably, one participant in this study later became a hedge fund manager, philanthropist, author, and Democratic political activist, Whitney Tilson.
The procedure involved one male and one female experimenter. The male experimenter conducted sessions with three boys and two girls, while the female experimenter conducted sessions with three girls and two boys. The small room where the test took place featured a table with a barrier between the experimenter and the child. On the table, behind a small barrier, were a small marshmallow and a pretzel stick in an opaque cake tin, along with a Slinky toy. Another table next to the barrier table held a box containing battery-operated and manual toys, visible to the child. A chair, another table, and a desk bell were also present on one wall of the small room.
Initial Findings and Follow-Up Studies
In the first experiment, children were tested under various conditions: waiting for a delayed reward with external distraction (toys), with internal distraction (conceptualization), waiting for a delayed reward (no distraction), external distraction without a reward delay condition (toys), and internal distraction without a reward delay condition (conceptualization). The overall results from the three distinct experiments conducted revealed several important findings. Effective delay of gratification was found to be highly dependent on the cognitive avoidance or suppression of the reward objects while waiting for them to become available. Furthermore, when children thought about the absent reward, it was just as difficult to delay gratification as when the reward items were directly in front of them. Conversely, when the children waited for the reward and it was not visually present, they were able to wait longer and obtain the preferred reward. The significance of the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment lies in its demonstration that effective delay is not simply achieved by thinking about things other than what we want, but rather depends on inhibitory and avoidant mechanisms that reduce frustration.
Follow-up studies indicated that children who were able to wait longer for the more desirable reward tended to exhibit better life outcomes. These advantages included higher SAT scores, better educational attainment, and lower body mass index (BMI). This suggested a correlation between early self-control and later success in various aspects of life.
