The Citroën SM, a luxury sports coupe produced by the French automaker Citroën in collaboration with Maserati from 1970 to 1975, stands as a testament to ambitious automotive engineering. Unveiled to the public in March 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show, the SM was designed to be a high-performance grand tourer, combining Citroën's renowned technological sophistication with Maserati's powerful engines. Its development, spanning nearly a decade, aimed
to create a vehicle that would not only elevate Citroën's brand image but also surpass established German luxury coupes in performance and innovation. The SM's unique blend of advanced hydropneumatic suspension, a Maserati V6 engine, and distinctive styling made it an icon of its era, though its production run was ultimately cut short by external factors.
Project S: The Genesis of a Vision
The journey to create the SM began in the late 1950s, shortly after the commercial success of the Citroën DS. The idea was to develop a high-end grand tourer that would enhance the French brand's prestige. Despite the popularity of models like the 2CV and DS, Citroën felt its brand was perceived as too "popular." The company observed the success of luxury vehicles, particularly from Mercedes-Benz, in Europe and the U.S., and sought to create a car that could compete in this segment. This ambition led to the initiation of "Project S" (Project Sport), directed by Jean Cadiou, then head of Citroën's project office. The project's long gestation period, over a decade, was marked by uncertainty regarding the final technical solutions.Initially, the focus was heavily on mechanical development rather than body design. Citroën considered a wide range of engine options, including a revised and more powerful version of the DS's 4-cylinder engine, and was already working on 6- and 8-cylinder engines. Test mules, disguised with DS body panels (including sedan, coupe, and convertible configurations), were rigorously tested on Citroën's proving grounds. These tests were conducted with utmost secrecy to prevent premature leaks of the company's plans. Some prototypes even featured the "cat's eye" front end of the DS, and one was even bodied as a Panhard 24, a brand Citroën acquired in the mid-1960s. These experimental vehicles tested various engines, ranging from 2-liter Citroën units with 93 to 140 horsepower, to new twin-cam engines and experimental 6-cylinder units, all produced by Citroën. These prototypes were not discarded after testing but were repurposed by the company's sports department for competitions.
