Robert Anderson of the National Center for Health Statistics confirmed that this increase in monthly fatalities was statistically significant and likely driven by Hurricane Maria. Ultimately, the government acknowledged that the death toll was greater than the initial 64, and in August 2018, based on a commissioned study, the official death toll was revised to 2,975 people, ranking Maria as one of the deadliest hurricanes in United States history. The final estimated death toll is 2,982.
The Governor's Response and Future Improvements
In the face of mounting criticism and evidence, then-Governor Rosselló proposed creating a new national electronic reporting system in his 2018 recovery report, "Transformation and Innovation in the Wake of Devastation."
