Missile launch control centers (LCCs) are critical components of the United States' national security infrastructure. A typical Minuteman wing consists of several squadrons,
each comprising multiple flights. Each flight directly controls ten Minuteman missiles remotely from a launch control center. The LCC is an underground structure made of reinforced concrete and steel, designed to withstand weapon effects and protect the missile combat crew and equipment.
Inside the LCC, a missile combat crew of two officers is responsible for controlling, monitoring, and launching the missiles in unmanned launch facilities. The crew can countermand launch attempts initiated by other flights in its squadron, ensuring that missile deployment is carefully managed. The LCC is equipped with voice communications capabilities, allowing the crew to coordinate with maintenance teams and security squads.
Command and Communication
Each Minuteman squadron has a designated Squadron Command Post, which can take control of and remotely launch missiles from any flight in its squadron. In the event of an authenticated Emergency War Order, the Squadron Command Post can execute the ICBM fire mission. Additionally, one of the wing's Squadron Command Posts is designated as the Wing Command Post, capable of executing orders for any flight in the wing.
Communication within the LCC is facilitated by the Hardened Voice Channel, linking the five Combat Crews in the squadron. The Emergency War Order circuit connects the squadron command posts, allowing for coordinated communication during critical operations. These systems ensure that missile deployment is managed efficiently and securely.
