New Amsterdam, known in Dutch as Nieuw Amsterdam, stands as the regional capital of East Berbice-Corentyne in Guyana. It is one of the country's largest towns, situated approximately 62 miles (100 kilometers) from the national capital, Georgetown. Located on the eastern bank of the Berbice River, about 4 miles (6 kilometers) upriver from its mouth at the Atlantic Ocean, and immediately south of the Canje River, New Amsterdam is a vibrant center with
a population of 14,762 inhabitants as of 2022. Its history is marked by Dutch colonization, which has left a lasting architectural legacy.
Historical Roots and Urban Development
The town's present layout is relatively compact, characterized by three main roads intersected by about a dozen cross streets. This structure reflects its historical development, with some colonial buildings still standing from the period of Dutch influence. The town is governed by a mayor, Kirt Wynter, and boasts a thriving market, which serves as a central hub for commerce and community interaction. The strategic location of New Amsterdam on the Berbice River has historically made it an important point for trade and transportation within the region.
Travel from New Amsterdam extends to various parts of the country. One can reach Crabwood Creek, approximately 45 miles (72 kilometers) away, via the Courantyne River. Additionally, a road leads up the Berbice River bank to the town of Mara, situated about 25 miles (40 kilometers) to the south. The opening of the Berbice Bridge in December 2008 significantly improved travel to New Amsterdam, establishing a direct connection to Georgetown and enhancing the town's accessibility and economic prospects.

New Amsterdam functions as a vital port and is home to a government-run hospital, providing essential services to its residents and the surrounding areas. The town's architectural landscape is notable for its many old colonial buildings, some of which date back to the era of Dutch colonization, offering a glimpse into its rich past. Mission Chapel has been recognized as a National Heritage Site, underscoring its cultural and historical significance.
Education is well-represented in New Amsterdam with several key institutions, including Berbice High School, Berbice Educational Institute, Vryman's Erven Secondary, Tutorial Academy, and New Amsterdam Secondary, which was formerly known as New Amsterdam Multilateral High School and opened in 1975. For recreation, a ground known as Esplanade, located west of Esplanade Road, once served as a popular picnicking site. The town also offers various accommodation options for visitors, including Church View Guest House, Astor Hotel, Little Rock Hotel, Leisure Inn Hotel, The Penguin International Hotel, and the Parkway Hotel, alongside the more recently built Little Rock Suites on Main Street.
Modern Utilities and Media Landscape
In terms of modern utilities, New Amsterdam is served by three television stations. DTV-8 is centrally located within the town, while Little Rock Television Station (LRTVS) Channel 10 operates from Vryman's Erven. TVG is another station situated on St. Ann Street. LRTVS holds the distinction of being the first television station in the Berbice region. The town also saw the launch of its first radio station in 2014, broadcasting from Little Rock on FM 88.5 MHz, further enhancing local communication and media access for the community.
