Richmond Raceway, a prominent motorsport track located in Henrico County, Virginia, boasts a rich history of evolution and adaptation. Opened in 1946, the facility has undergone significant transformations, starting as a half-mile dirt track and eventually becoming the modern 0.75-mile asphalt D-oval it is today. Early Beginnings and Initial Operations
The story of Richmond Raceway begins in June 1942, amidst World War II, when the Virginia State Fair Association acquired a 460-acre plot of land known as Strawberry Hill. This purchase was reportedly driven by concerns that the State Fair might lose its original location due to potential acquisition by the United States Department of War for wartime purposes. However, the relocation of the original grandstands and fair buildings to Strawberry Hill was delayed until at least 1943 due to war efforts, and further postponed by another year.
Work on transferring the main fair grandstand to the Strawberry Hill location finally commenced in 1944. By 1945, the newly named Atlantic Rural Exposition (ARE) was announced as an agriculture trade show, slated for the fall of 1946, contingent on the end of WWII. A budget of $300,000 (equivalent to over $4.9 million today) was approved in February 1946, which included plans for a $10,000 half-mile race track. The track was completed by June 1946, with organizers hoping to host harness, automobile, and motorcycle races. The inaugural ARE opened on October 7, 1946. The track officially opened to the public on October 11, 1946, for postponed harness races, with the first automobile races held a day later on October 12, won by Ted Horn. The American Automobile Association (AAA) sanctioned its first races there the following month, and motorcycle races began in May 1947. At its opening, the track's grandstands could accommodate 3,200 spectators.
Paving and Reconfiguration Efforts
For over two decades, the track remained a dirt surface. However, a significant change occurred in August 1968 when track officials announced its paving, which was completed by early September. The first race on the new paved surface, a NASCAR Grand National Series event, took place on September 9. Immediately after paving, the track length was adjusted to 0.542 miles, though its exact length remained a point of contention, having been disputed since its inception as a half-mile track. In March 1969, it was reclassified as a half-mile track, only to be readjusted back to 0.542 miles five months later. Further improvements in 1972 included repaving the lower lanes in the second and fourth turns and extending the pit road.
The most dramatic reconfiguration came in 1988 when the track was rebuilt into its current 0.75-mile D-oval layout. This major overhaul significantly altered the track's character and capabilities. The first race under these new conditions was held in September 1988. Further enhancements included the installation of stationary lighting for the fall race in 1991, allowing for night racing. In 2010, a modern LED video tower was erected, featuring four high-definition LED screens, each measuring 28 by 24 feet, to display live race action, advertisements, and driver introductions during events. These continuous upgrades underscore Richmond Raceway's commitment to maintaining its status as a premier motorsport venue.
Addressing Criticisms and Expansion
Throughout the 1970s, Fairgrounds Raceway faced criticism for its inadequate and outdated fan facilities, as well as a lack of seating capacity despite high spectator demand. It was also noted for offering some of the lowest purse money in the Cup Series circuit at the time. In response, co-promoters Ken Campbell and Paul Sawyer explored proposals for a new superspeedway in Prince George County, with plans for a 1.75-mile track with 16–18° banked turns and a permanent seating capacity of 50,000. However, these ambitious plans, including the Colonial–America Raceway proposal, ultimately fell through due to rising costs, economic uncertainties, and persistent delays.
Despite the failed replacement proposals, Fairgrounds Raceway continued to evolve. In 1975, the track expanded its seating capacity by replacing bleachers in the first turn with new grandstands, increasing capacity to 18,000. A 1/5-mile dirt oval was also constructed in the infield for motorcycle racing. The track's name was shortened from Richmond International Raceway to Richmond Raceway in 2017, coinciding with announced infield renovation projects that were completed between 2017 and 2018. These efforts demonstrate a consistent drive to modernize and improve the facility, ensuring its continued relevance and appeal in the competitive world of motorsport.
