During the early 1960s, while other musical phenomena like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, and Judy Collins were experiencing significant commercial success and influencing youth culture, Hester maintained a somewhat more understated position. Unable to fully establish herself as a folk-rock artist, she ventured into psychedelic music with her group, the Carolyn Hester Coalition, before temporarily stepping away from the music scene. Her personal life also saw significant developments; she married jazz pianist, songwriter, and producer David Blume in 1969. Blume was known for composing the 1966 hit "Turn Down Day." Together, they founded the Outpost label and opened an ethnic dance club in Los Angeles.
In the 1980s, Hester made a return to recording and performing, embarking on concerts and tours. A notable performance occurred in 1992 when she sang counterpoint with Nanci Griffith on Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather" at a tribute concert for Dylan's thirtieth anniversary at Madison Square Garden in New York. This performance was included in the VHS release of the concert. In 1999, Hester released a tribute album dedicated to Tom Paxton and later appeared in an August 2000 episode of the television series *Biography* focusing on Bob Dylan.
