Early Days: Following European Footsteps
The origins of Japan's top formula championship can be traced back to 1973 with the establishment of the All-Japan Formula 2000 Championship. This marked the beginning of a structured single-seater racing series in the country. In its early years, the Japanese series largely mirrored its European counterparts in terms of technical regulations. This trend continued as the championship transformed into the All-Japan Formula Two Championship in 1978, and then again into the All-Japan Formula 3000 Championship in 1987. During these periods, the focus was on aligning with established international formula racing standards, allowing Japanese drivers and teams to compete with technology and rules familiar to the global motorsport community.
While touring and sports car racing, exemplified by the Japanese Grand Prix from 1963 to 1969, enjoyed significant popularity, formula car racing faced a more challenging path to widespread acceptance. The inaugural JAF Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway in 1969 was a pivotal moment, marking Japan's first major single-seater race. By 1971, the Japanese Grand Prix itself was reformatted to center around formula car racing. However, neither of these events initially achieved the same level of spectator popularity as the earlier sports car races, indicating the gradual process of building a dedicated audience for single-seater disciplines.
The Modern Era: Independence and Identity
A significant turning point arrived in 1995 with the establishment of Japan Race Promotion (JRP), which took over the management of the series in 1996. This coincided with a rebranding to the Formula Nippon Championship, ushering in what is widely considered the modern era of the series. Under JRP's guidance, the championship began to assert more independence regarding its technical regulations, moving away from a strict adherence to European standards. This shift allowed the series to develop its own unique characteristics and appeal.
The most recent name change occurred in 2013, when the series became known as Super Formula, officially titled the Japanese Championship Super Formula until 2016. This rebranding solidified its contemporary identity as a premier racing category. Throughout its history, iconic circuits have played a crucial role. Fuji Speedway, despite a renovation-induced hiatus in 2004, has been a consistent fixture on the calendar since the very first All-Japan F2000 Championship season in 1973. Similarly, Mobility Resort Motegi (formerly Twin Ring Motegi) has hosted races every year since its opening in 1997, and Sportsland Sugo has been a perennial venue since its current configuration debuted in 1987. These circuits have provided the battlegrounds for generations of Japanese and international drivers, contributing to Super Formula's status as a top-tier global racing series.
