WWJ (950 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Detroit, Michigan, and is widely recognized for its dedicated all-news radio format, known as WWJ Newsradio 950. Owned by Audacy, Inc., the station serves the Metro Detroit area and holds a significant place in the community as Michigan's only all-news radio station. Its commitment to providing continuous news, traffic, and weather information has made it a consistent presence in the lives
of its listeners.
The Transition to All-News and Consistent Popularity
In 1971, WWJ (AM) made a pivotal shift in its programming strategy. With the increasing popularity of FM radio and stereo broadcasting, the station phased out its daytime middle-of-the-road music programming. In May of that year, it officially adopted a strictly news and talk format during daytime hours. For the first several years of this all-news format, the station did simulcast the beautiful music format of WWJ-FM 97.1 during overnight hours. However, the core all-news format on WWJ has remained steadfast since then.
This dedication to news has proven highly successful, enabling WWJ to consistently rank among the Detroit area's most popular stations with adult listeners. The station has even occasionally achieved first place in local surveys, underscoring the community's reliance on its news coverage. This enduring popularity speaks to the station's ability to meet the information needs of its audience effectively over several decades.
Comprehensive Programming and Community Service
WWJ distinguishes itself by offering a comprehensive news service, famously featuring "traffic and weather together" every 10 minutes "on the eights" around the clock. This consistent delivery of essential local information is a cornerstone of its programming. The only exceptions to this continuous news cycle are during live sporting events and infomercials, which are often, though not always, integrated into its schedule. In instances of schedule conflicts, WWJ also carries sports events normally broadcast by its sister stations, such such as Detroit Tigers baseball games when WXYT-FM is broadcasting Detroit Red Wings hockey. In these cases, the regular news programming remains accessible online, ensuring listeners can still get their news.
Beyond its daily broadcasts, WWJ has embraced modern platforms to serve its audience. In March 2005, the station began streaming its programming over the internet, expanding its reach. By August 2005, it started offering podcasts of newsmakers, interviews, and some of its feature programming, providing on-demand access to content. In August 2006, WWJ began broadcasting in the HD Radio format, further enhancing the listening experience. While there was a brief period in July 2015 when the station aired pre-recorded reports overnight to cut costs, it returned to live news around the clock by 2016, reaffirming its commitment to 24/7 live news coverage for the Detroit community.
