Obedience stands as a powerful form of social influence, stemming directly from the commands or orders of an authority figure. The willingness of individuals to yield to instructions from those perceived as having legitimate control has been a subject of intense psychological study, revealing surprising insights into human behavior. Landmark experiments have demonstrated that people can be remarkably obedient, even when their actions may cause distress
or harm to others. This phenomenon underscores the profound impact that authority figures can have on individual conduct, often overriding personal moral compasses.
The Milgram Experiment: Unveiling the Power of Command
One of the most well-known and controversial studies on obedience is the Milgram experiment, conducted by Stanley Milgram. Participants were led to believe they were taking part in a study on the effects of punishment on learning. They were assigned the role of "teacher" and instructed to administer electric shocks of increasing severity to a "learner" (an accomplice) for each incorrect answer. If participants hesitated, an experimenter (another accomplice, perceived as an authority figure) would encourage them to continue, taking responsibility for any harm.
The results were startling: about two-thirds of participants were willing to administer the highest level of shock, despite hearing agonized screams and pleas from the learner. Milgram suggested that participants might have entered an "agentic state," where they allowed the authority figure to take responsibility for their actions. The experiment also revealed significant tension and emotional strain among participants, with some experiencing full-blown seizures, highlighting the profound psychological conflict between obedience and personal morality.
The Stanford Prison Experiment: Role-Playing and Dehumanization
Another classical study on obedience and social influence is the Stanford Prison Experiment, led by Philip Zimbardo in the 1970s. College-aged students were randomly assigned roles as either "guards" or "prisoners" in a simulated prison environment. The goal was to study the impacts of "social forces" on behavior. The setting was designed to physically resemble a prison and induce a "psychological state of imprisonment."
The experiment quickly escalated, with "guards" adopting aggressive and dehumanizing behaviors, while "prisoners" became hostile and resentful. The "guards" obeyed orders and became aggressive, finding ways to humiliate and disrupt the "prisoners" through systematic searches, strip searches, and denial of basic rights. The cruelty of the guards and the resulting stress on the prisoners forced Zimbardo to terminate the experiment prematurely after only six days. This study powerfully demonstrated how perceived authority and assigned roles could lead individuals to abandon their social and moral values, complying with the demands of the situation.
The Hofling Hospital Experiment and Real-World Implications
The Hofling hospital experiment further illustrated obedience in a professional setting. In this study, nurses were instructed by an unknown doctor over the phone to administer an unsafe dosage of an unauthorized medication to a patient. Despite hospital rules against such actions, a significant number of nurses complied with the doctor's orders. This experiment, alongside Milgram's and Zimbardo's, concluded that humans are surprisingly obedient in the presence of perceived legitimate authority figures.
The Nuremberg Trials, following World War II, also provided stark real-world evidence of obedience to authority. Many Nazi officials pleaded that they were simply "following orders" from those higher in rank, knowingly causing harm and death. This historical context underscores the critical importance of understanding the mechanisms of obedience, as it can lead to severe consequences when individuals comply with malevolent authority, even against their own moral judgment.
Modern Perspectives and Neuroscience
Modern psychologists continue to study obedience, building on these foundational experiments. Jerry Burger replicated Milgram's method with alterations to ensure participant safety, finding similar rates of obedience up to a certain point. His research also explored participants' thoughts about personal responsibility and the learner's well-being, and whether gender differences existed (he found none).
Neuroscience has recently begun to explore the question of obedience, offering complementary insights into how obeying or issuing commands affects brain functioning. Studies using fMRI have shown that when participants delivered a mildly painful electric shock to another person, activations in brain regions associated with empathy (anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula) were lower in coerced conditions compared to free-choice conditions. Additionally, the sense of agency, or feeling of control over one's actions, was reduced when individuals obeyed orders. These findings suggest that obedience can alter our natural aversion to hurting others by diminishing empathy and personal responsibility.
