Listening is often perceived as a simple, passive act, but it is, in fact, a complex and systematic psychological process that extends far beyond the physiological act of hearing. While hearing is a natural phenomenon of perceiving sound, listening is a conscious choice and an interpretive action taken to understand and make sense of what is heard. This distinction is crucial for appreciating the depth and significance of effective communication.
Listening involves not only the perception of sounds but also the interpretation of intonation patterns that highlight information and the relevance of the topic under discussion.
Differentiating Hearing from Listening
Semiotician Roland Barthes characterized the distinction between listening and hearing by stating, "Hearing is a physiological phenomenon; listening is a psychological act." People are constantly hearing, often subconsciously, but listening is an intentional act. It is the interpretative action undertaken by an individual to comprehend and potentially derive meaning from something they hear. This means that while sounds may register in our ears, true listening requires active engagement and a conscious effort to process and understand the auditory input.
Furthermore, listening differs from obeying. A person who receives and understands information or an instruction, but then chooses not to comply with it or agree to it, has still listened to the speaker. The outcome, in this case, is not what the speaker desired, but the act of listening—the reception and understanding of the message—has occurred. This highlights that listening is about comprehension, not necessarily agreement or compliance. Interpersonal listening is also influenced by social positioning, where factors like identity and cultural background shape how individuals are heard and interpreted, adding another layer of complexity to the psychological act.
The Three Levels of Listening According to Barthes
Barthes proposed that listening can be understood on three distinct levels: alerting, deciphering, and understanding how the sound is produced and how it affects the listener. The first level, alerting, involves the detection of environmental sound cues. Certain places are associated with specific sounds that make them familiar and comfortable. An unfamiliar sound, such as a squeaking door or a breaking window, acts as an intrusion and alerts an occupant to potential danger, demonstrating an immediate, almost primal, level of listening.
The second level, deciphering, involves detecting patterns when interpreting sounds. An example is a child waiting for the sound of their mother's return home, actively listening for specific cues like jingling keys or the turn of a doorknob that signal her approach. This level requires recognizing and interpreting sequences of sounds. The third level, understanding, means knowing how what one says will affect another. This form of listening is particularly important in psychoanalysis, where a psychoanalyst must suspend judgment to communicate with a patient's unconscious without bias. Similarly, in everyday interactions, lay listeners must suspend judgment when listening to others. These three levels often function simultaneously, with the second and third levels frequently overlapping and intertwining, as obtaining, understanding, and deriving meaning are part of the same continuous process. For instance, hearing a doorknob turn (obtaining) can almost automatically lead to the assumption that someone is at the door (deriving meaning).
Interpersonal Listening and Memory's Role
Interpersonal listening involves complex affective, cognitive, and behavioral processes. Affective processes encompass the motivation to listen to others, while cognitive processes include attending to, understanding, receiving, and interpreting both the content and relational messages. Behavioral processes involve responding to others with verbal and nonverbal feedback. Listening is also intrinsically linked to memory. Research indicates that when background noises were present during a speech, listeners were better able to recall the information when hearing those noises again. This suggests that contextual sounds can serve as memory cues, helping to retrieve previously heard information. For example, if a person reads or engages in another activity while listening to music, they can often recall that activity when they hear the music again later, illustrating the powerful connection between listening and memory.
