However, a crucial 10-0 run by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade prevented the U.S. from trailing significantly in the first quarter. Despite the U.S. holding a 14-point lead at one point, Spain consistently chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to eight points by the second quarter and further to seven in the third.
The fourth quarter saw intense back-and-forth action. A three-point field goal by Rudy Fernández reduced the U.S. lead to just two points with 8:13 remaining.
