Ha Long Bay, a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site in Vietnam, is not only famous for its iconic limestone karsts and islets but also for its intricate and diverse cave systems. These caves are more than just natural attractions; they are geological archives, preserving evidence of the bay's long and complex evolution. From ancient phreatic passages high above sea level to unique marine-carved notches at the water's edge, the caves of Ha Long Bay offer
a fascinating glimpse into the forces that have shaped this extraordinary landscape over millions of years. Understanding these subterranean wonders reveals the dynamic interplay of water, rock, and time.
Remnants of Old Phreatic Caves
One significant category of caves in Ha Long Bay consists of remnants of old phreatic caves. These are ancient passages that formed when the limestone was completely submerged below the water table, allowing water to dissolve the rock in all directions. Today, these caves are found at various heights, indicating significant geological uplift and changes in sea level over time. Notable examples include Sung Sot, Tam Cung, Lau Dai, Thien Cung, Dau Go, Hoang Long, and Thien Long caves.
Sung Sot cave, located on Bo Hon Island, is a prime example, featuring a large passage over 10 meters high and wide that descends from its entrance chambers on a high ledge. Tam Cung is a large phreatic fissure cave, divided into three chambers, which developed along the bedding planes of the limestone. Thien Cung and Dau Go caves, both found on the northern part of Dau Go Island at elevations between 20 and 50 meters above sea level, are believed to be parts of the same ancient cave system. Thien Cung boasts a single large chamber over 100 meters long, partially subdivided by massive stalactites and stalagmites, while Dau Go is a substantial tunnel descending along major fractures.
Old Karstic Foot Caves
Another important type found in Ha Long Bay is the old karstic foot caves. These caves are a common feature in mature karst landscapes, typically forming at the base level where widespread lateral undercutting occurs. Their main passages are generally close to horizontal and are often associated with denuded or accumulated terraces from older base levels. These foot caves can sometimes extend into complex maze caves, which are stream caves draining from larger systems within the limestone.
Examples of these include Trinh Lu, Bo Nau, Tien Ong, and Trong caves. Trinh Nu cave, one of the larger foot caves in the bay, has a ceiling approximately 12 meters above sea level and extends about 80 meters in length, suggesting multiple stages of development. Bo Nau cave is another horizontal cave that contains old stalactite deposits and cuts across the 25-degree dip of the bedding plane. These foot caves provide valuable insights into the historical water levels and erosion patterns of the region.
Unique Marine Notch Caves
Perhaps the most distinctive cave type in Ha Long Bay is the marine notch cave. These formations are a special feature of the bay's karst, created by the combined processes of seawater dissolution acting on the limestone and erosion by wave action at the base of cliffs. Under favorable conditions, this dissolution allows the cliff notches to steadily deepen and extend into full caves. Many of these caves, located at sea level, extend completely through the limestone hills into drowned dolinas, which now exist as tidal lakes.
A key characteristic of marine notch caves is their remarkably smooth and horizontal ceilings, precisely cut through the limestone. It's important to note that not all marine notch caves formed at the present sea level; some preserve evidence of older sea levels related to Holocene transgression events or even Pleistocene sea levels. Some also retain remnants of older phreatic caves or developed from old karstic foot caves in mainland environments. A particularly unusual example is the Bo Ham lake group on Dau Be Island, which features hidden lakes connected by tunnel-notch caves. Luon Cave on Bo Hon Island is another, extending 50 meters to an enclosed tidal lake and featuring a massive stalactite truncated at the modern tidal level, showcasing its multi-stage formation.
