and a distinctive set of botanical features. Originally native to southern and eastern Europe, northern parts of the Middle East, and Central Asia, catnip has since naturalized across various regions, including northern Europe, New Zealand, and North America. Its common name, catnip, is often used interchangeably with catmint, though catmint can also refer to the entire *Nepeta* genus.
Physical Characteristics and Growth
*Nepeta cataria* is a relatively short-lived perennial herb that typically grows to a height of 30 to 100 centimeters (approximately 12 to 39 inches). It is characterized by its square stems, a common trait among plants in the mint family. The plant's leaves are described as grayish canescent, meaning they have a whitish or grayish appearance due to a covering of fine hairs, particularly on their undersides. These leaves are attached in pairs on opposite sides of the stems and vary in shape, from cordate (heart-shaped) to deltoid (triangular) to ovate (egg-shaped). They measure between 2 to 9 cm (0.8 to 3.5 in) in length and 0.6 to 6 cm (0.2 to 2.4 in) in width. The edges of the leaves are either coarsely crenate, having wavy, rounded edges, or serrate, featuring asymmetrical, forward-pointing teeth.Catnip is a herbaceous plant that regenerates annually from a taproot, though it does not root deeply. Older plants tend to develop more branches, and particularly healthy specimens can take on a mound-shaped form. The plant's overall appearance is somewhat gray, contributing to its distinctive look. These inflorescences are located at the tips of the branches and can range from 2 to 8 cm (0.8 to 3.1 in) long, featuring inconspicuous bracts. Despite their small size, the flowers are quite fragrant. A single catnip plant has the potential to produce several thousand flowers, though at any given time, less than 10% of them will be in full bloom.The individual flowers are bilaterally symmetrical and measure approximately 10 to 12 mm (0.39 to 0.47 in) in length. Their petals are typically off-white to pink, often adorned with purple-pink spots. They are bilabiate, meaning they have two lips; the upper lip consists of two lobes, while the lower lip is much wider and has a scalloped edge. Following successful pollination, the plant produces fruit in the form of nutlets. These nutlets are nearly triquetrous, meaning they are three-sided with sharp edges and concave sides, and are egg-shaped overall. Each nutlet is approximately 1.7 by 1 mm (0.067 by 0.039 in) and can contain between one and four seeds. The seeds themselves are dark reddish-brown with two white spots near their base.
Taxonomy and Habitat Requirements
Carl Linnaeus first described *Nepeta cataria* in 1753. While there are no recognized subspecies, the plant has multiple botanical synonyms, reflecting its long history of study and classification. The genus name *Nepeta* is derived from medieval Latin, reportedly referencing Nepete, an ancient Etruscan city, and its historical association with cats is evident in its traditional names dating back to medieval England.Catnip thrives in a variety of soil types, from clay to sandy, and can even grow in shallow and rocky conditions. However, it is crucial for the plant to have good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can be detrimental to its health.
