John Frank Tesh Jr., born on July 9, 1952, has carved out a multifaceted career in American media, transitioning from a well-known sportscaster and television presenter to a successful musician and, ultimately, a nationally syndicated radio host. His journey showcases a remarkable adaptability, moving between sports commentary, daytime talk shows, and musical performance before finding a lasting niche in radio with his unique blend of music and practical
advice. This evolution highlights Tesh's ability to connect with audiences across various platforms and interests.
Early Career in Sports and Television
Tesh's early career saw him gain significant recognition in the world of sports broadcasting. He served as a sportscaster for CBS and later for NBC, covering major events that cemented his presence in American households. From 1983 through 1986, he anchored the Tour de France bicycle race, notably providing commentary for its first American broadcast. His sports anchoring also extended to the US Open tennis tournament and gymnastics events at both the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.
Beyond sports, Tesh ventured into general television presenting. He hosted the daytime talk show "One on One with John Tesh" on NBC from 1991 to 1992. Following this, he co-hosted "John & Leeza from Hollywood" with Leeza Gibbons, another personality from "Entertainment Tonight," from 1993 to 1994, also on NBC daytime. These roles established him as a familiar face on television before his pivot to music and radio.
Transition to Music and "Roundball Rock"
While known for his broadcasting, Tesh is also a composer and musician, primarily playing piano and keyboards. A significant musical contribution came in 1990 when he composed "Roundball Rock" for the NBA on NBC. This iconic theme song served as the NBA on NBC's theme from 1990 to 2002 and is slated to return in 2025. The tune also became the theme for Fox College Hoops starting in 2018.
The development of "Roundball Rock" is an interesting anecdote in Tesh's career. He conceived the melody in July 1989 in a hotel room in Megève, France, while covering the Tour de France for CBS. NBC, having acquired NBA broadcasting rights, was seeking theme music. Tesh, without instruments or a recorder, called his home answering machine to sing the preliminary melody. Upon returning to Los Angeles, he recorded the theme in his studio. He submitted the recording to NBC under a pseudonym, fearing that his public image as a TV host might prejudice their decision. The placeholder title, "Roundball Rock," inspired by a game announcer's phrase, ultimately stuck, and NBC selected it from six candidates.
The Rise of "Intelligence for Your Life"
After a decade as co-host for "Entertainment Tonight," which he left in 1996, Tesh focused on his career as a contemporary keyboardist. This shift eventually led to the creation of "The John Tesh Radio Show" in 2003. The show, nationally syndicated, typically airs on adult contemporary, classic hits, Christian, and soft rock radio formats. Its distinctive feature is the integration of music with various factoids and information Tesh deems useful to listeners, often covering topics related to health and well-being.
These informational segments, known as "Intelligence for Your Life," are broadcast across the United States, Canada, and the Armed Forces Network. Select portions are also distributed as vignettes to other radio stations, including talk radio formats and morning shows. In 2010, a three-hour weekend show, "Intelligence for Your Health," hosted by his wife, Connie Sellecca, was launched. In late 2014, a television version, "Intelligence for Your Life TV," debuted in syndication, featuring health segments hosted by Sellecca, based on her radio program. Tesh's radio programs are among the most-listened-to, reaching audiences in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., often competing with other popular shows like Delilah's.
