Early Beginnings and Botanical Hair Care
Patrick Alès, the founder, established Laboratoires Phytosolba before 1969, a brand dedicated to botanical hair care formulated with plants. This initial venture laid the groundwork for what would become Ales Groupe. Alès, a hairdresser credited with inventing the blow-drying technique in 1964, started the company after his own salon faced bankruptcy. Supported by a loan from Jacques Dessange, Phytosolba Laboratories began producing and selling plant-based hair treatments, known as phytotherapy, primarily through pharmacies under the Phyto brand.
The company's early success was rooted in this specialized approach to hair care, emphasizing natural ingredients. This focus on botanical formulations distinguished it in the market and established its reputation for innovative, plant-derived products. The brand Phyto, initially Phytosolba, became a cornerstone of the company's offerings, appealing to consumers seeking natural solutions for their hair care needs.
Expansion, Public Listing, and Diversification
In 1979, a significant development occurred when the L'Oréal group acquired 49% of Phytosolba Laboratories' capital. This strategic investment enabled the company to acquire Lierac, a plant-based cosmetics brand created four years prior. The acquisition of Lierac marked Ales Groupe's entry into the dermocosmetic sector, diversifying its product portfolio beyond hair care. In 1983, Phytosolba Laboratories further expanded by acquiring Laboratoires de médecine végétale.
The group's international expansion commenced in the early 1990s, accelerating its growth and reach. A pivotal moment arrived in 1995 when Patrick Alès, following a successful lawsuit against L'Oréal, bought back its shares for 90 million francs, largely financed through debt. This move solidified his control over the company. On October 15, 1996, the Ales group was renamed Phyto-Lierac and went public on the Second Market of the Paris Stock Exchange. This public offering allowed the founder and his family to sell 15% of the capital and raise 60 million francs. At this time, revenue was primarily generated from high-end hair products (57% under the Phyto brand) and dermocosmetic products (41% under the Lierac brand, sold in pharmacies).
Acquisitions, Financial Challenges, and Leadership Changes
Following its public listing, Phyto-Lierac continued its expansion strategy. In June 1997, it issued a 220-million-franc convertible bond to finance further acquisitions. That same year, the group purchased the Ducastel laboratory, which specialized in professional hair-coloring products and generated 31 million francs in revenue. In 1998, Phyto-Lierac acquired Parfums Caron, a company that had experienced losses in the preceding years, with the purchase price estimated between 40 and 95 million francs.
After repaying its convertible bonds in January 2004, Phyto-Lierac, by then renamed Ales Groupe, launched a capital increase of €19.4 million. By 2004, exports accounted for 50% of its revenue, a significant increase from 30% in 1996, highlighting its growing international presence. However, the company faced financial difficulties in the early 2010s, reporting its first losses in 2012. In February 2018, Ales Groupe was in a challenging financial situation, leading to a leadership change where Patrick Alès, chairman of the supervisory board, was replaced by his son, Romain Alès. The company sold Parfums Caron in October 2018 for just under 30 million euros. Despite a capital increase in May 2019, the situation worsened by late 2019, leading to the suspension of trading of Ales Groupe shares on Euronext Growth in June 2020. In summer 2020, the company entered receivership, with its cosmetics division sold to Impala for 13.5 million euros and the haircare division taken over by its managers.
