Test anxiety is a psychological condition characterized by a combination of physiological over-arousal, tension, and somatic symptoms, alongside worry, dread, fear of failure, and catastrophizing. These
reactions occur either before or during test situations, creating significant barriers to learning and performance for many students. This condition can also be referred to as anticipatory anxiety, situational anxiety, or evaluation anxiety. While some level of anxiety can be normal and even helpful for staying alert, excessive anxiety can lead to emotional or physical distress, difficulty concentrating, and emotional worry, ultimately hindering academic success.
The Nature and Impact of Test Anxiety
Research indicates a direct correlation between high levels of emotional distress, such as that experienced with test anxiety, and reduced academic performance, as well as higher overall student drop-out rates. Beyond academics, test anxiety can negatively affect a student's social, emotional, and behavioral development, influencing their self-perception and feelings about school. It's estimated that between 25 and 40 percent of students experience test anxiety, with higher rates observed among students with disabilities and those in gifted education classes. These students often find themselves easily distracted during tests, struggle with comprehending relatively simple instructions, and have difficulty organizing or recalling relevant information.
Highly test-anxious students typically score about 12 percentile points lower than their peers with low anxiety. This inferior performance doesn't stem from intellectual problems or poor academic preparation, but rather from the testing situation itself creating a sense of threat. The anxiety generated by this perceived threat then disrupts attention and memory functions, making it challenging for students to demonstrate their true abilities. The prevalence of test anxiety among student populations worldwide has led to its formal study since the early 1950s, with pioneering work by researchers like George Mandler and Seymour Sarason, and later Irwin G. Sarason, who clarified its relationship with other forms of anxiety.
Physiological and Cognitive Manifestations
During states of excitement or stress, the body releases adrenaline, a hormone known to cause physical symptoms associated with test anxiety. These symptoms can include an increased heart rate, sweating, and rapid breathing. While adrenaline can be beneficial in stressful situations by promoting alertness and preparation, for some individuals, these symptoms become overwhelming, making it impossible to focus on tests. The severity of these symptoms can range from moderate, allowing students to still perform relatively well, to severe, potentially leading to panic attacks.
