The Roan Coat and Hairless Features
One of the most defining characteristics of the Lykoi is its roan coat pattern, a feature unique among cat breeds. This roan pattern consists of a mixture of fully white and fully colored hairs, creating a speckled or grizzled effect. While any color is accepted within the breed standard, black is the most common. This distinctive coat, combined with areas of hairless skin, contributes significantly to its wolf-like aesthetic. The Lykoi's appearance is further enhanced by a "mask" of hairless skin across its face and nose, and around its eyes, giving it a particularly intense gaze.
Beyond the roan fur, Lykoi cats are also notable for their periodic molting. Individuals can vary from being almost entirely covered in fur to nearly hairless at different points in their lives. DNA testing has confirmed that these cats do not carry the genes responsible for other hair variations seen in breeds like Sphynx cats (known for hairlessness) or Devon Rex and Selkirk Rex cats (known for curly hair). Instead, their sparse fur and molting patterns are linked to a specific genetic variation that also contributes to certain skin conditions. A 2020 study revealed significant differences in the skin and hair of Lykoi cats compared to domestic shorthairs, which were used as a control group.
This study found that all Lykoi cats examined had some degree of lymphocytic mural folliculitis, a condition that results in significantly sparser hair. This suggests that Lykoi cats may be in a perpetual state of allergic reaction, as this condition is typically observed in cats experiencing skin inflammation, with symptoms including crusted skin, hair loss, itching, and scabbing. Furthermore, the study noted that Lykoi cats have an increased average sebaceous gland area per hair follicle group. This means owners need to be diligent with grooming and bathing to prevent overly oily skin. Lykoi are also prone to cysts and blackheads, which breeders and owners often consider largely cosmetic, while activists raise concerns about their impact on the cats' quality of life. It's important to note that the cysts, folliculitis, and the distinctive partially hairless appearance all stem from the same genetic variation, meaning attempts to breed out the skin conditions have also led to less noticeable masking and roaning.
Physical Build and Temperament
In terms of physical build, Lykoi cats are expected to have a wedge-shaped head and a lithe body, without excessive bulk. Their ears and nose often feel leathery, and their skin, typically pink, can darken when exposed to sunlight. Despite their somewhat wild appearance, Lykoi are generally described as having sweet personalities. They are known to be active and playful, yet also reserved and independent.
