India, the seventh-largest country globally, spans a total area of 3,287,263 square kilometers. Situated north of the equator, its mainland extends from 8°4' north to 37°6' north latitude and from 68°7' east to 97°25' east longitude. The country measures 3,214 kilometers from north to south and 2,933 kilometers from east to west. With a substantial land frontier of 15,200 kilometers and a coastline stretching 7,516.6 kilometers, India presents a remarkably
diverse physiographic landscape. This vastness encompasses significant mountain ranges, expansive plateaus, and historically intricate border regions that have shaped its identity and development.
Prominent Mountain Ranges: The Satpura and Vindhya
Among India's notable physical features are its mountain ranges, particularly the Satpura and Vindhya. The Satpura Range is located south of the Vindhya Range and east of the Aravali Range. It originates in eastern Gujarat near the Arabian Sea coast and extends eastward across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. This range stretches for 900 kilometers, featuring numerous peaks that rise above 1,000 meters. The Satpura Range is triangular in shape, with its apex at Ratnapuri, and its two sides run parallel to the Tapti and Narmada rivers.
Running parallel to the Vindhya Range, which lies to its north, these two east-west mountain systems play a crucial role in India's geography. They effectively divide the vast Indo-Gangetic plain from the Deccan Plateau, which is situated north of the Narmada River. This geographical separation has historically influenced climate, migration, and cultural development across the subcontinent, creating distinct regions with unique characteristics.
Expansive Plateaus: Malwa, Chhota Nagpur, and Southern Granulite Terrain
India is also home to several significant plateaus, each with its own distinct features. The Malwa Plateau, for instance, spreads across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. It has an average elevation of 500 meters, with a landscape that generally slopes towards the north. The majority of this region is drained by the Chambal River and its tributaries, while the western part is fed by the upper reaches of the Mahi River.
To the east lies the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, covering much of Jharkhand and adjacent parts of Odisha, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh. This plateau spans approximately 65,000 square kilometers and is composed of three smaller plateaus: Ranchi, Hazaribagh, and Kodarma. The Ranchi plateau is the largest, with an average elevation of 700 meters. Much of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau is forested, characterized by dry deciduous forests, and is renowned for its vast reserves of metal ores and coal, making it an economically vital region.
Further south, the Southern Granulite Terrain (SGT) covers South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, excluding the Western and Eastern Ghats. The SGT is a geologically significant region of the Indian Shield, representing the southernmost part of the Indian peninsula, south of the stable Dharwar Craton. Unlike the lower-grade metamorphic rocks found further north, the SGT consists of high-grade metamorphic rocks (granulites) formed deep within Earth's crust under extreme pressure and temperature. It is separated from the Dharwar Craton by a transition zone known as the "Fermor Line" and features major shear zones like the Moyar-Bhavani, Palghat-Cauvery (PCSZ), and Achankovil (ASZ), which act as boundaries between different blocks within the SGT.
Complexities of the Bangladesh Border
India's land frontiers include a 4,096.70-kilometer border with Bangladesh, shared by the states of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. This border has historically been characterized by a unique arrangement of enclaves. Before 2015, there were 92 enclaves of Bangladesh on Indian soil and 106 enclaves of India on Bangladeshi soil. These enclaves were eventually exchanged to simplify the border, a process that resulted in India losing approximately 40 square kilometers to Bangladesh. This exchange resolved a long-standing geographical and administrative complexity, streamlining the management of this shared frontier.
