Cadillac's Journey to Detroit
Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac was born in Gascony, France, and arrived in North America in 1683. By 1694, Cadillac had become the commander of Fort de Buade in St. Ignace, Michigan, where he gained valuable experience in managing colonial affairs.

Establishing Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit
On July 24, 1701, Cadillac founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, named after Louis Phélypeaux, comte de Pontchartrain, the French Secretary of State of the Navy.
