WTHI-TV, a prominent television station in Terre Haute, Indiana, has a rich history that dates back to its first broadcast on July 22, 1954. As the first television station in the Terre Haute market, WTHI-TV has undergone
significant changes and developments over the years. This article explores the historical timeline of WTHI-TV, highlighting key milestones and transformations that have shaped its journey.
The Early Years
WTHI-TV was founded by Tony Hulman, a local businessman and owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At its inception, the station was affiliated with CBS, NBC, ABC, and the DuMont Television Network, providing a diverse range of programming to its viewers. The station operated from a studio facility at 918 Ohio Street, which was originally constructed in 1906 to house a garment factory. This location also became home to WTHI-FM upon the television station's sign-on.
In August 1956, WTHI-TV lost its affiliation with the DuMont Network when it ceased operations. NBC programming moved to WTWO, the city's second television station, in September 1965. By April 1973, WTHI-TV exclusively aligned with CBS when ABC programming moved to WIIL-TV.
Ownership Changes and Technological Advancements
The Hulman family owned WTHI-TV until 1998, when it was sold to Emmis Communications. In 2005, Emmis sold the station to LIN TV Corporation, placing it under common ownership with other CBS affiliates in Indiana. This period marked significant technological advancements, including the creation of digital subchannel 10.2, which initially aired a 24-hour simulcast of the station's Doppler radar system.
In October 2012, WTHI-TV relocated its operations to a new facility at 800 Ohio Street, separating from WTHI-FM. The original studio building was demolished to accommodate parking for a new office building. This move marked a new era for the station, enhancing its operational capabilities.
Recent Developments and Future Prospects
In 2014, Media General merged with LIN Media, and shortly thereafter, Nexstar Broadcasting Group acquired Media General. Due to FCC ownership rules, Nexstar was required to sell WTHI-TV, which was acquired by Heartland Media in 2016. In 2019, Allen Media Broadcasting purchased WTHI-TV, and in 2025, Gray Media acquired the station, marking its entry into the Terre Haute market.
As of 2025, Allen Media Group announced plans to explore strategic options for its television stations, including WTHI-TV. This decision reflects the ongoing evolution and adaptation of the station in response to financial challenges and market dynamics. WTHI-TV's journey is a testament to its resilience and ability to navigate the ever-changing landscape of television broadcasting.
