The NS Savannah stands as a remarkable achievement in maritime history, being the first commercial nuclear-powered cargo ship. Design and Construction
The NS Savannah was constructed with a focus on both functionality and aesthetics. Measuring 596 feet 6 inches in length and 78 feet in beam, the ship was designed to be visually impressive, resembling a luxury yacht more than a traditional cargo vessel. It featured three full decks and nine water-tight compartments, including a reactor compartment and a machinery compartment. The reactor was strategically placed near the center of the ship, allowing for easy access during refueling.
The ship's interior was equally impressive, with a main lobby, dining room, and passenger cabins that could accommodate up to 30 passengers. Each cabin was equipped with a private bath, and the dining room featured a sculpture entitled "Fission" by Pierre Bourdelle. The ship also boasted a swimming pool and a library, further enhancing its appeal as a luxurious vessel.
Technological Innovations
At the heart of the NS Savannah was its pressurized water reactor, designed to civilian standards with an emphasis on safety and reliability. The reactor used low-enriched uranium and was housed in a cylindrical containment vessel. This vessel was designed to withstand significant pressure, ensuring the safety of the ship and its crew.
