Jivamukti Yoga, a distinctive style of yoga, was established in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Life. This method is characterized by its rigorous physical practice, which is seamlessly integrated with profound spiritual teachings. At its heart, Jivamukti Yoga emphasizes not only the physical postures and breathing techniques but also a strong commitment to vegetarianism and social justice. The name itself, "Jivamukti," is derived from the Sanskrit
word "jivanmukta," signifying an individual who is "awakened in this life" or a "liberated individual," reflecting the practice's ultimate goal of self-realization and freedom.
The Vision of Sharon Gannon and David Life
Sharon Gannon, born in 1951, is an American yoga teacher, animal rights advocate, musician, author, dancer, and choreographer. Alongside David Life, she co-founded the Jivamukti Yoga method. Gannon has been a prominent figure in the yoga community, presenting annually at national and international conferences since 1993. In 2009, she initiated the Jivamukti Tribe Gathering conference, specifically designed for advanced teachers, fostering a community of dedicated practitioners and educators.
Both Gannon and Life are lifelong and outspoken advocates for animal rights and ethical veganism. Gannon's commitment to these principles is evident in her work, including her involvement in setting up the Animal Mukti Free Spay & Neuter Clinic in 1999, which significantly reduced the number of unwanted pets in New York City. Their dedication to compassionate living was recognized in 2008 when they received the Compassionate Living Award from Farm Sanctuary. David Life, a co-founder, has been described by a student as someone who was "fearless about combining the path of yogi with the path of participant," believing that anyone with desire and enthusiasm could attain yoga.
Core Principles and Global Expansion
The philosophy of Jivamukti Yoga is deeply rooted in the concept of "jivanmukta," aiming to help individuals achieve a state of liberation while living. The practice combines powerful asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation, often accompanied by discussions on yoga philosophy and music. This holistic approach seeks to increase practitioners' spiritual awareness, moving beyond mere physical exercise to encompass a broader spiritual journey.
In 2017, Gannon and Life transitioned the ownership and operations of Jivamukti Yoga to Camilla Veen and Hari Mulukutla, under the new entity Jivamukti Global. This transfer marked a new phase for the organization, allowing the method to continue its worldwide reach. Jivamukti Yoga is now taught globally through Jivamukti Yoga Schools and affiliated centers, ensuring that its unique blend of physical rigor, spiritual teachings, and ethical principles remains accessible to a diverse international community. The method has also attracted notable individuals, with celebrity students including Sting, Russell Simmons, Madonna, and Uma Thurman, further highlighting its widespread appeal and influence.
