Historical Stigma and Subcultural Associations
For much of the 20th century, tattoos in many parts of the world, especially in Western countries, were strongly associated with particular lifestyles that were often marginalized or seen as rebellious. Sailors, for instance, were historically known for their tattoos, which often served as mementos of their travels or symbols of their maritime experiences. Similarly, prisoners frequently used tattoos as a means of identification within their groups, to mark their criminal affiliations, or to express personal narratives within the confines of incarceration. These associations contributed to a public perception of tattoos as marks of the "other" or symbols of a life outside conventional societal norms.
This historical stigma was not unique to the modern era. In the Roman Empire, for example, gladiators and slaves were tattooed, with exported slaves marked "tax paid" and runaway slaves branded with "FUG" (fugitive) on their foreheads. Such practices clearly linked tattoos with servitude, punishment, and a lower social status. Later, religious strictures also played a role; Emperor Constantine I banned facial tattooing around AD 330, and the Second Council of Nicaea in AD 787 prohibited all body markings, deeming them a pagan practice. These historical precedents illustrate how tattoos have, at various times, been used to denote undesirable social categories or were outright forbidden due to religious or moral objections.
The Mainstreaming of Tattoo Culture
The turning point for tattoos in Western fashion largely began in the 1970s. Since then, tattoos have become increasingly common for both men and women, transcending economic classes and age groups, from teenagers to middle-aged adults. This widespread adoption signifies a dramatic redefinition of the tattoo's meaning. For many young Americans, in particular, the tattoo now carries a decidedly different meaning than it did for previous generations. This cultural evolution is evident in the legal landscape as well; Oklahoma, for instance, was the last state to legalize tattooing in 2006, having banned it since 1963, reflecting a nationwide trend towards greater acceptance. The presence of ready-made designs known as "flash" in tattoo parlors, prominently displayed for customers to choose from or use as inspiration, further illustrates the commercial and accessible nature of tattooing today, solidifying its place as a mainstream cultural phenomenon.
