The 1921 World Series, while a landmark event for its on-field action and broadcasting firsts, also featured a number of intriguing behind-the-scenes stories involving player health, disciplinary actions, and the significant public interest it generated. This championship series, which saw the New York Giants face the New York Yankees, was not without its share of drama extending beyond the diamond, offering a glimpse into the early days of professional
baseball's evolving rules and celebrity culture.
One of the most notable player issues involved Babe Ruth, the Yankees' star slugger. Due to an infected arm and a knee injury he sustained in Game 5, Ruth did not start the final three games of the series. His only appearance in these games was as a pinch-hitter in the final inning of Game 8. This limited participation from such a dominant player undoubtedly impacted the Yankees' performance and added an element of uncertainty to the series outcome.
Post-Series Barnstorming and Commissioner Landis's Authority
Following the conclusion of the World Series, Babe Ruth and teammate Bob Meusel engaged in postseason barnstorming, which was against the rules for Series participants at that time. This defiance of regulations led to both players being suspended for a number of games at the start of the 1922 season. Ruth personally appealed to Commissioner Landis, who, while upholding the suspensions, agreed to rescind the rule effective at the end of that season. This incident highlighted the early authority of the Commissioner's office in Major League Baseball and its role in maintaining order and enforcing rules among players.
The disciplinary action against Ruth and Meusel underscored the league's efforts to control player activities outside of official games, particularly after the high-profile events of the 1919 World Series scandal. Landis's decision to both punish the players and then modify the rule demonstrated a balance between upholding existing regulations and adapting to the changing landscape of professional baseball.
A Magnet for Dignitaries and a Gathering of Baseball Figures
The 1921 World Series was a major social event, attracting prominent figures from various fields. Then-New York Governor Nathan L. Miller, described by The New York Times as "a big baseball fan," made plans to attend games as a guest of the Commissioner of Baseball. Harry L. Davis, the Governor of Ohio, was also expected to be among the several VIPs attending the games, showcasing the widespread appeal of the series beyond just sports enthusiasts.
The series also brought together significant baseball personalities. It was the fourth World Series for Giants' assistant coach Hughie Jennings, known for his distinctive "Eee-yah!" cheer. Jennings, who had previously managed the pennant-winning Detroit Tigers teams of 1907, 1908, and 1909, had been brought in by John McGraw as an assistant coach for the Giants the previous October. Jennings and McGraw had a shared history, having been teammates on the old Baltimore Orioles in earlier seasons, adding another layer of historical connection to the event.
