"The Lucy Show" underwent significant transformations in its premise, cast, and setting throughout its six-season run, adapting to evolving storylines and production decisions. Initially, the series centered on widow Lucy Carmichael living in Danfield, New York, with her two children, Chris and Jerry, and her divorced friend Vivian "Viv" Bagley, who also had a son, Sherman. This early setup provided a foundation for Lucy's frequent attempts to access
her late husband's trust fund, managed by a local banker, and her various job endeavors to supplement her finances. However, by its fourth season, the show dramatically reconfigured its core elements, leading to a fresh dynamic and new comedic opportunities.
The Danfield Years: Establishing the Original Premise
In its inaugural seasons, "The Lucy Show" established Lucy Carmichael as a resourceful, if often comically misguided, widow. Her life in Danfield, New York, was characterized by her interactions with her teenage daughter Chris and younger son Jerry, as well as her close friendship with Vivian Bagley and Viv's son, Sherman. A recurring plot device involved Lucy's attempts to persuade her banker, initially Mr. Barnsdahl and later Mr. Mooney, to release funds from her trust. Lucy also explored various jobs, adding to the comedic scenarios. The social lives of Lucy, Viv, and Chris, including their regular dating, further enriched the early episodes, with Viv even having a regular boyfriend, Eddie Collins.
This initial premise allowed for a stable ensemble cast and a familiar small-town setting. However, as the show progressed, the creators sought to refresh the format, leading to a major overhaul that would redefine the series' direction. This retooling was not merely a minor adjustment but a fundamental shift in the show's narrative and character relationships.
The California Shift: A Major Retooling
The most substantial changes occurred in 1965, at the beginning of the fourth season. Lucy Carmichael moved to Los Angeles, ostensibly to be closer to her daughter Chris, who was attending college in California. Chris, however, no longer appeared on the show, and Jerry was enrolled in a military boarding school in Los Angeles, effectively writing him out of the series as well. Vivian Vance's character, Viv, now remarried as Vivian Bunson, remained in Danfield, though she made a few guest appearances later in the series.
This move to Los Angeles brought about new character dynamics. Lucy's new best friend became Mary Jane Lewis, played by Mary Jane Croft, who had a history of performing with Lucille Ball. Crucially, Mr. Mooney, Lucy's banker, was also transferred to the Los Angeles branch of the bank, and Lucy eventually became his employee. This new setting provided ample opportunities for celebrity guest stars to appear as themselves, often becoming entangled in Lucy's schemes. References to Lucy's children and her trust fund were gradually phased out, firmly establishing Lucy Carmichael as a single woman working in Los Angeles.
Cast Adjustments and Enduring Friendships
The retooling of "The Lucy Show" also involved significant cast changes. With Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael) and Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley) departing, only Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael) was initially retained, making only two appearances to facilitate the transition before being phased out. This strategic reduction in cast was explained by Oscar Katz, a Desilu vice president, as a way to allow for greater financial renegotiation with the network due to the radically changed format. Mary Jane Croft, who had previously played Audrey Simmons in earlier seasons, returned as the new character Mary Jane Lewis, becoming Lucy's new confidante and co-conspirator, effectively replacing Vivian Vance in that role.
Despite these changes, some familiar faces continued to contribute. Vivian Vance made three guest appearances in the final two seasons as Vivian Bunson, with passing references to her and Lucy's former life in Danfield. Gale Gordon, as Mr. Mooney, remained a central figure, and his character's dynamic with Lucy evolved within the new Los Angeles setting. These shifts allowed "The Lucy Show" to maintain its comedic energy and appeal, adapting to new creative directions while retaining the core comedic talent of Lucille Ball.
